Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I mentioned this in my toppler thread, but I haven't been around much the past 10 days, and won't for a few more weeks as I have stumbled into a new job.

A team member has resigned suddenly. She is a level up from me, I'm the longest member of my team, and I have worked with her boss before in my old job. So I am the natural fit as an acting in the position so she can hand over everything in two weeks (she leaves on Wed). And my boss has sold it to me as a try before you buy offer, as we will have to recruit for the ongoing fill.

Problem is she administers a major internship course for the whole university with our Parliament (yup, interns for politicians). Monopoly for the ENTIRE country. And O Week is next week, so semester starts in 10 days with students I am looking after in senator's offices for example...

And just an election in May, while i'm acting, which impacts semester 2. Where the country is expected (and I personally agree with) to throw their collective toys out of the pram. So god knows who I need to set up internships with starting in June, if anyone.

Yay... and people are wondering why I'm not excited.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yeah we haven't gotten much snow this year but Esther picture just looked like a typical winter picture of around here to me. But not this year haha. Should watch my mouth. We've gotten 3 ft of snow on St Patrick's day before

Elementary kids give Valentine's to everyone in the class and they have a party. So my kids spent 4 days making paper flowers for all their classmates rather than the conventional store bought valentine route.

Good luck with the new position Rus

Don't tempt luck!
And cheers mate. Thanks for the wishes :D

4 days of creating things for valentines is crazy. I like it more, coz it actually means effort than shop bought stuff. But what do kids think the "holiday" is about? What's the message? Beside buying Hallmark cards (yay marketing).

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Good question. Let me try to remember to ask my kids later. I've never really pondered it. It's just what gets done around here. I don't remember seeing the point when I was a kid either

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Renee wrote: "I have to ask, How do you knw girl pee attracts foxes? Us city dwellers need to know.."

Apparently it has pheromones and hormones in it that attracts the foxes. Same for the repelling, I believe that it marks the territory for a male and they can't tell the difference between boy fox pee, and boy human pee.

Haven't done experiments myself to test, too risky with the squwarkers. But this city girl trusts the farmers on the internet, and it seems to work.

Why unmotivated?

message 519: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments There's not that much work to do because I'm rounding things up. I can think of one or two things, but they mean really diving into some new stuff and I just don't feel like that. Seems a bit useless when there's only 2 days left.

Glad it got fixed!

And how fantastic that the winter break coincides with the beautiful weather! Must be great that the kids can play outside :) I have a week off in 2 weeks, hope the weather will be nice then too.

We had the amazing weekend last weekend (17C from Friday-Sunday). This week is still okay, especially for this time of year. Around 12C but not as much sun. But they predict again a sunny and warm weekend! I can't believe it's this Spring-like weather for days on end. And I know it shouldn't be like this and maybe isn't a good sign, but I can't help liking it anyway.

message 524: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Yes, nice weather has been a blessing. Specially because Christmas break was very cold, and we were kind of sick, so we spent the whole time at home. Being this vacations so close to the Christmas break (only 5 weeks apart) I was afraid of being inside for two weeks again. But we are enjoying everyday. I didn't check what the weather will be next week. I will be upset if this springish weather leaves us so I am procrastinating having that info as much as possible. :)

message 525: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol, it will definitely leave us at some point again. Too soon, probably. I like to mentally prepare myself for that day, if I wake up to cold and snow and grey skies while I was expecting warmth and sun, I'm going to be the grumpiest person on earth.

I had the last seminar with my mentor class today. They gave me flowers, chocolate and a card! So sweet!!

Yay for working toilets! Having the problem outside is probably a good thing in some way. At least they had to work outside and not destroy your house in the process.

message 529: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Wb Fiona

I am driving myself mad. I returned a book to the library unread. I remember putting in the drop box. I remember because I said out loud a curse word because I had not meant to return the book. I received a nasty look for the mother of two small children walking by. When I got home I went to my library record. I figures I would Just request the book again.

On my record,I saw all the books were checked in except that book. I called the Library and the book can't be found.

I know I returned it. I have such a clear memory of returning it. But it is gone. The library claims they looked for it. But it is gone.

This type of thing just makes me crazy. I need to know where the book went. I am obsessed with figuring this out. What makes it worse is the book was a mystery that I really want to know who did it. Oh welll

message 530: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Renée, it happened to me twice and I found the books at their shelves in the library. Picked them, went to the counter, and explained the situation to the librarians. It seems if you pass the books to fast on the reader/sensor or whatever is called it didn't do the check in. I guess when you complain they look for the book in the return area, but not in the shelves. I don't know. It worked for me.

message 531: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments Thank you Lisa and Renee :)

Renee, I hope they‘ll find the book in the shelves or elsewhere. I don’t know this problem myself but I can totally understand why you‘re mad.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments That is indeed a mystery, Renee. I hope they find the book.

message 533: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Hi all. Apologies for not reading through the thread but I am exhausted! I thought the only excitement in my life last week was the toppler - not was I wrong!! Both my uncle and my aunt nearly died but thankfully didn't.

My uncle was already in hospital waiting for his next round of plastic she when he came down with pneumonia. My aunt,on the other side of the country, collapsed suddenly and was rushed to hospital. It was touch and go for a while but she is stable now. She has been diagnosed with Sepsis of the blood and is in isolation til they find the cause. Weirdly, both illnesses came to a head on Thursday so we were really pulled both ways. My aunt has 6 children and uncle has no-one so that made the choice easier!

Thanks to all the medics who were there for them they are both in the mend now and I am taking some time to catch my breath. What a week 😮

Kristie | 19138 comments I think there is some sort of birdie convention going on in my backyard today. It is so loud with the multitudes of tweeting that they are overpowering even in the house. It sounds like a scene from The Birds. The first few tweeters woke me up early this morning and it has gotten consistently louder since. I think they called all their friends. lol What a chatty group!

Lilisa | 2770 comments I think of spring when I hear birds chirping - is it a bit warmer by you, Kristie? Anyone planning to watch the Oscars today? I haven't watched in years and don't plan to. I remember how I used to spend all afternoon/evening watching the red carpet buzz and watch with bated (sp. corrected - hate when I do that!) breath for the awards - lol!

message 539: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments It's definitely weather related, Lilisa. We have had cold rainy weather for a long time now and it is starting to clear up today and it is getting warmer. It's supposed to finally be a decent day here and they clearly know it. Funny, right after I typed that it slowly got quieter. I think they moved to a new location. Must be a nice day for a road trip. lol

I'm not watching the Oscars. I never really watch awards shows. I used to want to see certain movies that won awards, but I hardly ever agreed with the critics, so I don't bother anymore.

Yep, like books - I wonder how some books make the Man Booker, Pulitzer, etc. awards. They should just let us choose! :-)

message 541: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments So glad to hear your aunt and uncle are on the mend, Margo.

Yay for birds waking you up! I had a stupid pigeon outside my window this morning just going "Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo." for 30 mins. Most infuriating thing!

Oscars, I just look at news online for the red carpet photos if I remember. Much more interesting ;) Mainly as we used to be so behind in movie releases here (thank goodness that's changed) that the awards would go to movies that weren't going to be realised in Australia for another year.

I am very behind all. i have badges ready for Jan to be posted tonight, and then worked out late last night (after dealing with being made to play cards until 3am the night before by my MIL) March is my challenge month and apparently it's nearly March. Will also post that tonight.

message 542: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I used to watch the Oscars every year. I've lost interest in the last few years. There are movies that were nominated that I'd never heard of. Like Rusalka, I'll watch for the pictures of the red carpet.

message 543: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Yes, the red carpet is probably the best part, although I'm passing. It's a nice cozy evening for reading to wind down the weekend.

message 544: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Glad they are on the mend Margo. What a day for you.

I had canadian geese this morning. They are noisy fellows.

It was so spring like at the weekend. We had a really nice weekend, lots of time outside, got lots done. I know it's only false spring. Knowing our luck we'll have snow again soon.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I don't know whether the Oscars were even televised here in the UK but if they were, I didn't watch them. I used to be really interested in the awards shows but I'm not anymore. I hardly ever agree with what gets nominated/wins. I saw the list of nominees for the Oscars this year and I hadn't even heard of most of them, let alone seen any of them. The only ones I really knew anything about were A Star is Born and The Favourite.

I once had a woodpecker wake me up by pecking on the corner of our house. It took me a minute to figure out what it was. I had to get up and try to shoo him away before he left a hole! Honestly, he thought he was going to build his home in my house. Little bugger.

message 548: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments I don't even have a real interest in the red carpet. Some of the dresses are pretty, some are obnoxious. It's the same pretty much every year.

We finally have some sun here. It's been raining forever and the sun just came out yesterday. It's still cold and it's only going to be here for a couple days, but I intend to enjoy it while it lasts.

message 549: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I never watched the Oscars. I don't care much about it (I only check the winners the next day if I come across it), and it's broadcasted here at 2am so not a very convenient time.

We had a wooden rack to hold the furnace oil tank just outside our bedroom window. Woodpeckers can be the most annoying birds. What a racket this one fellow made early one morning.

Generally they tap to scare any possible bugs hiding in the wood.
