Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments Happy New Year everyone!

This thread is a mish mash of activities, observations, and just plain silliness. Tell us what is going on in your lives.

Esther (nyctale) | 5190 comments LOL. You kicked me out of 2018 :) The thread locked on me while I was writing. (Still 45 minutes left to 2018 here! )

I stopped by to wish everyone a great 2019. And may it be filled by gread reads!!!!

I have not been around much in 2018. I cut my computer time down. I sure hope to be back more often this year.

message 3: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments Sorry about that Esther. I thought I'd get a head start on 2019.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Happy new year! Almost 14 hours into 2019 here.

We had a fun evening with friends. We played some games, had drinks and snacks, and went to bed at 3.30am. I feel a bit tired today. January 1 is always a bit of a useless day for me as I can't handle going to bed this late anymore, so I've taken tomorrow off too to have a proper day for myself.

message 11: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments I went to bed at 1am. Felt like a grandma but I was so so tired. Our party was at the neighbours house so my boyfriend could go back there after he tucked me in :D

message 12: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments No Fiona, I'm the old fogy of this group LOL I was in my bed by 10pm and asleep 10.30. I remember a few people coming in at 12 to say happy new year buy I was out of it!

I had a get together in my home with 3 of my closest friends. They arived at 2pm and headed off to various corners of the country at about 9pm. we chatted, snacked and sipped! It was a wonderful way to end the year :-D

message 13: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments That sounds lovely, Margo! I had a really quiet new year's eve. My husband worked until 11. I was home by myself and in bed when he got home. I stayed up until midnight, said happy new year, replied to a couple of new years texts and went to sleep about 12:30. Incredibly boring. lol I hadn't been feeling well, so I was perfectly ok with it. My grandson gave me his head and chest cold for Christmas.

I'm skipping out on my new year's plans today to rest up one more day. I have a get together with some friends tomorrow, so that will be my new year's celebration.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I hope you feel better soon, Kristie.

message 15: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Thanks, Sandra. I'm feeling better, but I'm not completely there yet and I was worried about infecting others so figured I'd give myself the extra day. Fortunately, I've had the luxury of getting extra sleep and fluids, so it wasn't too bad. I'm also fortunate that I don't get sick very often.

message 16: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Like you Kristie, I went down with a pretty nasty cold on Christmas Eve and I still haven't shaken it off completely. It's taking ages to go. My chest is now starting to feel quite painful and I'm coughing a lot so I'm wondering if it's developing into a chest infection. If it gets worse or doesn't at least start to get better in the next couple of days, I will go to the doctor.

On another note, I'm having a bit of a makeover on Thursday which I'm quite looking forward to. I'm going to have my hair cut pretty short. I'm thinking either a pixie-bob style or maybe a longer pixie cut. At the moment, my hair is shoulder length and I have never had it shorter than a bob before. I've been wanting to go short for a while now but never really had the guts to go for it. I think now is the perfect time as my hair has been suffering recently due to my Fibromyalgia. Cutting it a lot shorter should get it back into good condition and it will be a lot easier for me to manage too. So it's a win-win as far as I'm concerned 🙂

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I hope you both feel better soon!

Exciting Lisa! I'm sure it will look great!

message 18: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Sorry you haven't been feeling well, Lisa. That sounds a lot worse than mine. Hope it clears soon!

I also just got my haircut recently. It was halfway down my back and I got it cut to just brushing my shoulders, then I went back and got it cut to chin length. I was considering a pixie, but I really like it the way it is now. I was ready for a change and I figured the weight of my hair might be contributing to my migraines, so off it went. I'm really happy I did it.

And a hair cut sounds good. Go for it, girl!

Your haircut sounds lovely, Kristie. I think it's nice to change things up every once in a while. Have you found your migraines have improved since you had it cut? My fibro causes me a lot of scalp sensitivity and pain which is one of the reasons why I'm cutting my hair. I'm hoping having less of it will ease the pain a bit. Plus it will take less time to wash, brush etc.

I'm not sure if it's really helped or not. I started seeing an acupuncturist and he gave me some really nasty herbal tea that helped right about the same time so it's hard to say. I know it doesn't make it worse. Also, if I tied my long hair back it was heavy and I could feel it bothering me at times. I don't have that issue any more. Honestly, I'm willing to try anything that might help. I'm sure you have the same feeling with your fibro.

It sounds like it may have helped you. As you say, you are willing to try anything and everything that might help, even if it doesn't in the end. I go to acupuncture and she also started me on Chinese herbs. I have to take 2 spoonfuls twice a day in water and they are the most disgusting things ever. They nearly made me sick the first few times I took them. I'm more used to them now but they still taste foul. They do help a bit though so I guess it's worth it.

message 26: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Exactly! I had little packets that I had to dissolve in a little water three times a day. They were so nasty, but I started getting less migraines, so it was definitely worth it.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Happy New Year. I feasted on northern Italian food last night. I have a friend who is an award winning chef. Every year we pick a region ans she cooks it. Next year we will be doing Morocco.

Amazing food with amazing people fun night.

message 28: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I was in bed at 12:05 this morning.

I went with friends to the Crown & Anchor Pub to ring in the British New Years at 5:00 in the evening. There were bagpipes, appies, and champagne. From there, we went to Earls for supper. They have got the best Christmas decorations in town and makes for a very festive atmosphere. I was home in time to watch the fireworks at 10:00. I was already in my pj's, so wrapped a fluffy blanket around me and stood in the doorway to the deck. The deck has a mini mountain of snow on it.

Today, is my grandson's 20th Birthday! So who is the old fogey in this group??

I bought it for my mum for christmas so when she's watched it we'll borrow it.

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Hope you guys get rid of the colds soon! My mum came down with a cold the weekend before christmas and turned in to a chest infection. There's a lot of it about. I need to stay away from all that as i've literally just recovered from my chest issues.

Happy new year everyone! We went to the pub in the nearest village to us. It was very busy. We knew lots of people there and there was a band playing so we had a good time. As we're basically in the middle of nowhere, there was no taxi home option so we had to walk. It should have taken 45 minutes but it easily took and hour and a half. So we got home just after 3am. Needless to say, I've not done much today. Annoyingly the glass on our woodburning stove cracked this morning and nowhere is open to buy a new piece. We've had to bodge it together so we can have a fire as it's going to drop to -1C overnight and it would get very cold inside if we didn't have a fire. We can get a replacement tomorrow when the stores open again.

Kristie | 19123 comments What a wonderful idea, Renee. That sounds delicious.

message 32: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments So, remember that new job I got? I just got a phonecall from my current employer (the new chair of the department, who started his job yesterday) saying that already in December the previous chair started the process of extending my contract until August 2021, so 2 more years on what I had. And, he could probably give me some extra salary too (which I don't really care about tbh). So he asked me to think about it over the weekend and let him know on Monday, when he has a meeting to finalize all this.

On the one hand it's very nice that they want to keep me and that I all of a sudden have two jobs to choose from, on the other hand I'm again stressing about the decision to make. First I didn't know whether to apply or not, then I worried about whether or not to already hand in my resignation before signing the new contract, and now this.

But, after phone calls with Rob, my parents and sister, I have decided to send an email to my new job (it's closed now because of the holidays) explaining the situation and asking to have my meeting for the conditions (salary, working hours, prospects for getting a permanent contract) as soon as possible so I can make a proper decision. I lean towards the new job, but if the pay is much lower or the chance is high that it's only for a year, I would stick with the old one given their new offer.

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I think that's a good idea Peggy. You can't make an informed decision without having all that information from the new job. It's a nice position to be in though, having two options and it's definitely nice that they want to keep you on for longer.

message 34: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments It's totally understandable wanting to know the whole panorama before deciding, Peggy. It is stressing to make decision like this one but it is great to have options.

message 35: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Oh Peggy, what a great situation to be in! You must be very good at your job :-)

I hope you find out about term and conditions soon and that should make your desision easier. Less travel has to be a big plus. Would it save you much time?

message 36: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yes, it saves a lot of time. The new job would be 30 minutes on the train, and about 55 minutes from leaving my house to arriving at work (including cycling to the train station etc.). My current job is 1 hour 20 minutes on the train (I have two transfers with not such a good connection) and 1 h 45 minutes in total.

So that's definitely worth giving up some things for. But if the pay is a lot less or it's likely to be only for one year, I might be better off staying where I am.

message 37: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I think having an extra to yourself would be very tempting!

message 38: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 03, 2019 06:30AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Oh hard one Peggy, I would get the two offers and see what the details are. But also consider where you want to head in the next couple of years. But extra time to yourself each day does sound very tempting :D

Hope everyone gets better who are feeling off.

And happy new year to you all! I went off to my new years party which was lovely. We rocked up late as there were too many artistic designers in our house for our costumes (which were massively toned down), but was a lovely night.

About 2am, it was just us, my brother, our host, and a couple of others left at the party. I made a couple of rounds of drinks, which turned out to be potent (I am now banned). After 2 hours, we went to walk home (20 min walk), and I managed to face plant into the bitumen road outside my brother's old share house (2 houses down and who's current members were at the party with us). So. Much. Blood.

I completed freaked at that much of my own blood (which I didn't think I would). Went and sat on the step until the owner of the sharehouse who was partying with us came home, who is a nurse. She patched me up, checked me for concussion, gave me many icepacks, and put me into the 11 yr olds bed.

I have spent the last couple of days dealing with a very bruised ego, and my first ever black eye, as well as a lot of facial grazes. Thank goodness I took the rest of this week off!

Anyway. I thought it was a tame new years, until all this happened at 4am. And so embarrassed about it all I couldn't even come on here and tell you guys!

message 39: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments It seems you had an intense beginning of the new year, Rusalka. Hope you heal soon.

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Oh wow Rusalka! That sounds painful. I'm pleased you're ok physically except for the visual scrapes etc. I think Rusalka Cocktails should probably be off the menu for a while! You're not the only one who had an alcohol related fall over Christmas and New Year! Rob slipped on the gang plank as he was getting off our friend's boat on Christmas day. He was so lucky not to go in the canal or hit his head on anything. Just a bruised ego.

message 41: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Oh no, Rusalka! Not a good way to start your new year! Hope you're healing well and not having too much pain.

message 42: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Ouch Rus! I hope both your face and ego heal soon.

message 43: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments Ouch is right, Rus! I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself worse than what you did.

Peggy, it's nice that your department wants to keep you. It does present a bit of a dilemma for you.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments LOL oh Rusalka you can make my drinks any time I love a potent drink

message 46: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I had my hair cut today. I now have a pixie bob, although it's a bit more bob than pixie, and I also had a small undercut done on the left side. This is by far the shortest I have ever had my hair and I am so pleased with it. It looks and feels so much healthier, my scalp is already less painful and it will be a lot easier for me to manage. I also had it dyed a red/brown colour which looks really nice. It's always good to have a successful trip to the hairdresser 😀. And I just know I'm going to ask for a bigger undercut next time...😉

message 47: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments It sounds so cute. Enjoy your new look Lisa

message 48: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Sounds fab Lisa. Welcome to the undercut crew! I need to get my hair cut as it's in poor condition at the moment. I'm rubbish at remembering to go to the hairdresser regularly.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Glad to know you you are happy with the outcome, Lisa!

message 50: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments Congrats on the haircut. I’ve always found they have a way of changing ones outlook, so be ready for some big shifts with with such a drastic change. 😃
Always nice to have option Peggy. I’m sure when you have all of the offers in front of you a course of action will become clear. 👍
Oh Rusalka, black eyes are a badge of honor, with the right story . . . You just gotta come up with a good one . . . a nice thwarted mugging, or the like, should do nicely. 😎 And, I hope you heal quickly. 🤕
Happy New Years everyone! 🎉
