Wonderful graphic novel/biography about the trials of George Takei (Star Trek's Sulu) and his family when they were forced to leave their home after the Pearl Harbor attack and go into a internment camp simply because they were Japanese. Well written! I had read of his interment in one of his previous books but I feel this provided a little more information.

The Devil's Teeth: A True Story of Survival and Obsession Among Great White Sharks
Author: Susan Casey

3 Stars = It was okay. I don't regret reading it.

(The may not be, technically, a memoir, but it sure reads like one, as it focuses on Susan quite a bit.)

I liked this book ... not too sure I would like the author, though. Her actions caused severe, negative repercussions for the biologists, and the research program.

The parts where she focuses on the sharks, the history of the islands, and local characters, was good. The parts that focus the spotlight on Susan ... who is a bit of a drama queen ... not so good.

If you like sharks, if you like learning a bit of history, then you'll find things in the book to enjoy.

The following spoiler will enlighten you as to Susan's actions I mentioned earlier in this review.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Where Am I Now? by Mara Wilson

Apparently she is now living in New York so that answers that question...

Mara Wilson was a child actress famous for roles in Madame Doubtfire and eponomyous heroine Matilda. Which are my favourites! When she grew up she was no longer getting roles so basically this memoir book is about her angst about her identity. Some of its funny, some of its interesting (recollections of Robin Williams, fun on the set of Matilda with Danny Devito) and some sad -her mum dies of cancer when shes 8. But then there was this whole section on high school cliques and boyfriends and drama that I really had to plow through. Sorry Mara not that interested in your love life, who you crushed on and who you slept with. She also suffered OCD.

Now she is a writer cum storyteller, and predictably, comedienne but at the end I was a bit puzzled she goes to a burlesque show with her arty friends and says thats where she belongs. Or was she being ironic it was hard to tell.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Ok I just read on wikipedia that shes identified as bisexual. So that was what that was all about. Why didnt she just say?! Instead of going into great detail about her crushes and hangups and high school dramas.

Like Anna Paquin and Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus and Whitney Houston and all those other child stars. Ok am not really getting this trend...maybe it really is a thing with actresses. Apparently Judy Garland lived for a time with a female flatmate who everyone suspected was more than a friend but then was devastated that she went and got married at 19 ...then Judy went on to have 5 husbands some of whom were gay or bi. Maybe actresses are confuesed about their identities full stop cos they never know what role they going to play.

The Irresistible Con: The Bizarre Life of a Fraudulent Genius
Author: Francis Wheen

3 Stars = I liked the book.

Where to start?! The book, published in 2004, is about a conman named Karoly Hajdu, born in 1920 in Kispest, a town near Budapest. He lives the life of an impostor, taking a new name, occupation, etc. when it suited his needs. He was also a cross-dresser.

Eventually he/she settles on a name, and occupation ... Dr. Charlotte Bach, a supposed former lecturer at Budapest's illustrious Eötvös Loránd University. He/she came up with an alternative theory of evolution, known as 'Human Ethology'. He/she was even invited to speak at Darwin College, Cambridge, and Sussex University. He/she lived as Dr. Bach until his/her death in 1981. Only then, due to an autopsy, was it revealed to the world that Dr. Bach had, in fact, been an anatomical male.

Not sure if this is the same book, Who was Dr. Charlotte Bach?, published in 2002, but it sure looks like it might be.

Street Gang The Complete History of Sesame Street by Michael Davis

I didnt grow up with Sesame Street. I was more of a Captain Kangaroo kid. So I enjoyed reading the history of Captain Kangaroo and how that paved the way for educational children's programming. However, it was a little disappointing and surprising to find out Bob Keeshan was not as nice to work for as he seemed on television. Aside from that, the book seemed a little text-bookish at times, but if that's what you are looking for the research is impeccable and it IS called the Complete History Of Sesame Street, so I guess that would be reasonable to expect that. Interesting book, I just would not expect that it is going to be like sitting down with an old friend and chatting.

I tend to think they try so hard BECAUSE the man shows through the woman veneer. It's brave of "Dr. Bach" to try to look like a dowdy frumpster with old-lady hair and a gross-looking flowered dress instead of going for more of a RuPaul look, like

I watched Captain Kangaroo, Romper Room, The Friendly Giant and Chez Hélène. The latter two were Canadian so must have been on CBC since we didn't have CTV, at least not where I lived.

BUT, we moved to San Francisco for two years just before Sesame Street started so I would walk home at lunch time to watch it with my 3 year old brother (we have 5 kids), at least for a while. But it doesn't sound like I would enjoy it based on what you have written.

Both people in the following photo are "Dr. Bach". He made the photo by splicing together two separate photos.

The Curies: A Biography of the Most Controversial Family in Science
Author: Denis Brian

3 Stars = It was okay. I don't regret reading it.

If you're looking for a book on Pierre and Marie, it would do you well to pay special attention to the subtitle of this one. The actual text portion of the book is 399 pages, but by page 100 Pierre is dead, and by page 252 Marie is dead, and the remaining 147 pages is all about their daughters, Irene and Eve, and Irene's husband Frederic Joliot. From page 283 onwards, the story is mostly about Frederic's political life. Yes, there is still some science sprinkled in amongst the politics, but not enough to suit me.

Make no mistake, I am a huge fan of Marie and Pierre, and gobble up anything I can about them, so, I don't regret reading this book. But after the death of Marie, I was forcing myself to read the rest. But if you're interested in a well-rounded biography of all of the Curies' immediate family, you'd probably enjoy this book.

Unpaved Road An Iranian Girl's Real Life Story of Struggle, Deception and Breaking the Rules by Niki Bahara

This book was not what I thought it was going to be. The author description states that she lives in Los Angeles. I am always interested in learning more about why immigrants come to the United States but this isn't at all what this book is about. So just a word of warning, this is more about her relationship with her ex husband and not very much about the Iranian lifestyle and why people need to leave. If you go into it knowing this I think you will enjoy it a lot more.

Tied with George Carlin for my favorite comedian. I gave this book 5 stars. How sad that there will be no new material from either of these guys. I loved Robin's ability to ad lib in any situation. I believe his diagnosis was Lewey Body Dementia, which is similar to Alzheimer's disease but I believe much faster progressing. I can understand how someone with his intelligence would want to end his life before he got to the point where he didnt know who he was. I just watched the Glen Campbell documentary a couple of weeks ago and it was so very sad.

The State Boys Rebellion
Michael D'Antonio
4/5 stars
This is the true story of a group of boys and girls from the 1940’s in Massachusetts who were imprisoned in asylums during the time of the rising theories of eugenics. Entry into these schools was not equal and some of these children should not even have been in there. These children were abused, made into laborers, poorly educated and experimented on until they rebelled. Unfortunately, after release some did not do well and had trouble adjusting to outside life but they felt fortunate to be free. The book also talked about the influence that Pearl Buck and Dale Rogers had on opening up the institutions. They kept their developmentally disabled children at home which influenced families of the disabled to do the same thing. This is a shocking book and though I was familiar with the time period, I never realized the extent of the abuse at these homes. Well written!

If you've watched Mork And Mindy you HAVE seen someone on cocaine! He was always funny, but under the influence of the Bolivian marching powder he could ad-lib the jokes at 78 revolutions per minute for as many takes as they needed, all day long. On my fifth birthday I hid behind a chair when she sang "KareL--since in Canada my parents said Karin the same way that people say Karen I had no idea she was just singing a common name and thought she could see me through the TV screen! When I lived in Germany for a year they pronounced it another way, and then Scandinavian neighbours pronounced it the correct way :)

The reason I know exactly which birthday it was is because I turned 4 in Germany, don't remember any earlier birthdays, and I turned 6 in the house they built after we came back from that year in Europe.

But Koren--not common enough, I dare say!

Karin | 806 comments I read Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers Who Helped Win World War II by Liza Mundy

4 stars

Strong writing and strong women make this a strong read that I recommend. Why not 4 stars? Well, it takes a lot for me to give it 5 stars--this was definitely over 4.

What I like about this is that Mundy is able to follow some of the women until the 21st century so we can see what happened to them post-war. I am also happy that this history is finally hitting the mainstream, although I do hope the push against women in STEM fields doesn't swing to the extreme the other way, either--we still need choice to pursue what we want to, which is one of the main, original tenets feminism. Let's not put everyone into a box or belittle those who opt for other paths in life--we cheer they stay at home dad, let's not diss the woman who opts to stay at home.

Mundy was frustrated because she could find virtually nothing in the black women code breakers, and I feel her frustration; I wonder if any of these women lived long enough to feel free to tell their tales. One of the things I admire about these women is how well they kept their agreement to keep their work secret--if you sign a contract for that for this sort of work, then abide by it until you are released from it.

But be warned, this is a book set during a war--much of this work was done to lead to the defeat of an enemy so it resulted in deaths of those fighting the Axis powers. Don't diss the women who initially rejoiced when their work led to the defeat of the enemy, because if they hadn't done their jobs so well we might be living under fascism even now.

One Woman's War and Peace: A Nurse's Journey in the Royal Australian Air Force
Author: Sharon Bown

3 Stars = I liked the book. I'm glad I read it.

Pretty good book about a nurse in the Australian Air Force. She is deployed to East Timor, Bali, and Afghanistan. She also faces a lot of personal challenges, including being in a helicopter crash. She was even asked to speak at the 2014 Australian War Memorial's ANZAC Day Dawn Service.

If you like military memoirs, especially from a woman, or a nurse's, point of view, you may enjoy this.

Diane in Australia | 338 comments Touch the Top of the World by Erik Weihenmayer
Touch the Top of the World
Author: Erik Weihenmayer

4 Stars = Outstanding. It definitely held my interest.

This book is about Erik, and how he gradually went blind during his childhood/teen years. I really enjoyed the portions of the book about the years leading up to his going blind, and the years immediately following that. It was interesting to read about how his family dealt with the trauma and, also, how Erik, himself, forged a mindset, one tiny step at a time.

He became interested in rock climbing, which led to wanting to climb mountains. In fact, he set a goal to climb the Seven Summits - the highest mountain on each continent. In the mountaineering section of the book, he keeps it simple, so, if you don't have a background in 'mountain lingo', you won't be lost in terminology that goes straight over your head.

If you like books about how a young person deals with a medical/physical life-changing event, you'd probably enjoy this book.

Author: Michael J. Fox

3 Stars = I liked the book. I'm glad I read it.

“The ten years since my diagnosis have been the best ten years of my life, and I consider myself a lucky man.” ~ Michael J. Fox

This is Michael's first memoir. It was published about 4 years after he announced to the world his diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease. By the time he told the world, he had already been dealing with it for 7 years. It is a memoir about Michael, not a book about Parkinson's Disease, but you will learn facts about PD, and the hard choices he had to make as he dealt with it.

The book covers his childhood, alcoholism, marriage, kids, TV/movie career, and the 10 years he had spent with Parkinson's Disease. He seemed to be very sincere, honest, and totally upfront, about his life.

This is the story of Ruth Handler who was looking for an adult female doll for girls to play with. At the time there were only baby dolls or paper adult dolls for girls to play with. While traveling in Germany she saw a Bild Lilli adult doll which inspired the creation of the Barbie doll and which became a toy sensation. This was the beginning of the rise of Mattel but life for Ruth and her family would be a whirlwind of ups and downs. What an interesting read!

After reading the reviews for this book, I think I must be the only one that didnt get a lot out of this book and for the most part it was really boring. The book takes place during WWII in England. Written as if a child was writing this, I didnt really get the feeling that they were going through a war, except for the fact that we are told many times that they didnt have much food and had to use ration coupons. If you want to find out more of what the war was about I would look for something different.
I recently readThe Children of Willesden Lane. Beyond the Kindertransport: A Memoir of Music, Love, and Survival, which was also written through the eyes of a child and took place mostly in England, but had a lot more historical information.

Am miles away Koren, although mum was contemplating going when we were thinking of a roadtrip a few months ago. I wanted to go to Rotorua and maybe do a tree walk in the forest and she didnt want to as it was 'too dangerous' and suggested we check out White Island. I said what are you nuts, you really want to go to a live active volcano? Thats way more dangerous than a tree walk. We went to Rotorua instead. We walked through the redwood forest but stayed on the ground. (and saw other attractions)

I have not rubbed it in that she was the one keen to go to White Island but Im like no way. Plus its expensive there is only two ways to get there...helicopter or the tourist boat.
