Well, my fellow mountaineers, our 2018 climbing expedition is coming to a close and it's time to get ready for the Final Mountaineering Checkpoint. Where does the time go? I'm ready to hear how all our mountain-climbing team members have done out there on Pike's Peak, Mt. Ararat, Mt. Everest....whichever peak you've chosen. Checkpoint participation is absolutely voluntary and is not considered necessary for challenge completion.

For those who would like to participate in this checkpoint post, I'd like you to at least complete the first of these two things. And if you feel particularly inspired (or generous about humoring me during the holiday season), then please do both. Please comment on the thread with your answers.

1. Tell us how many miles you made it up your mountain (# of books read). If you've planted your flag on the peak, then tell us, take a selfie, and celebrate (and wave!). Even if you were especially athletic and have been sitting atop your mountain for months, please check back in and remind us how quickly you sprinted up that trail. And feel free to tell us about any particularly exciting book adventures you've had along the way.

Having learned my lesson last year about being too ambitious, I set my sights on Mount Everest again in 2018. I planted my flag on the peak at the beginning of November and loaded my spaceship to see how far I'd get up Olympus this time. (I just can't seem to make it to that peak). Right now, I have managed 127 books and I hope to claim one more before the ball drops on New Year's Eve.

2. The Words to the Wise According to Mount TBR: Using the titles of the books you read this year, see how many of the familiar proverbs and sayings below you can complete with a book read on your journey up the Mountain. Feel free to add/subtract a word or two to help them make sense. I have given my titles as examples:

A stitch in time...[saves] The Pink Camellia

Don't count your chickens...[before] The Grub-&-Stakers Pinch a Poke

A penny saved is.... (a) Payoff for the Banker

All good things must come... Before Midnight

When in Rome... I Capture the Castle

All that glitters is not... The Lacquer Screen

A picture is worth a... Odor of Violets Case with Three Husbands

When the going gets tough, the tough get... The Killing Strike

Two wrongs don't make (a)... Queen's Quorum

The pen is mightier than.... A Holiday Yarn

The squeaky wheel gets... (the) The Body in the Basket

Hope for the best, but prepare for... The Hellfire Conspiracy

Birds of a feather flock... Just Around the Coroner

And what do you get for all that hard work? The Checkpoint will close at 11:59 pm on Tuesday, January 8. On Sunday I will crank up the Custom Random Number Generator and pick a winning climber. He or she will have the chance to add to their TBR stack via my gently-used book vault (prize list will be sent). This prize may count towards your 2019 TBR climb.

Even if you're not in the mood for a prize or if you got distracted by pretty scenery or side trails (library books, ARCs, what-have-you), I'd love to have you check in and tell us how your 2018 mountain climb went!

***Please note--comments are for Checkpoint posts only. If you would like to congratulate fellow climbers on their trek, please go to their climb folders. This helps make it easier for me when I do the prize drawing. Thanks!

Hilary (A Wytch's Book Review) (knyttwytch) I got to my 150 finally (way too many good new books hit my kindle!), no need to add me to the draw!

Kristen Peppercorn (kiwicanread) | 23 comments I was climbing Kilimanjaro and I reached the top on November 21st. I read 64 out of 60 books off my TBR and I'm super happy with my progress. My goal for the year was to get my physical TBR down to 75 and it's currently at 76 so I'm good with that. This challenge really helped me to get my book buying completely under control.

message 4: by Rokkan (new)

Rokkan (rokk) | 21 comments 1. Tell us how many miles you made it up your mountain
I started of on Everest, and made it to the top there in July. After a slump of sorts in September where I read almost nothing, I've pulled things back and just now recorded my 150th book in this year's TBR!

2. The Words to the Wise According to Mount TBR: Using the titles of the books you read this year, see how many of the familiar proverbs and sayings below you can complete with a book read on your journey up the Mountain. Feel free to add/subtract a word or two to help them make sense. I have given my titles as examples:

A stitch in time... Beneath A Scarlet Sky

Don't count your chickens... Under A Pole Star

A penny saved is... An Almond For A Parrot

All good things must come... Under His Command

When in Rome... Everyone Brave is Forgiven

All that glitters is not... The Long Cosmos

A picture is worth a... Stillhouse Lake

When the going gets tough, the tough get... A Quiet Kind of Thunder

Two wrongs don't make... The Natural Way of Things

The pen is mightier than.... The Shadow's Curse

The squeaky wheel gets... The Portable Veblen

Hope for the best, but prepare for... The Deaths of Tao

Birds of a feather flock... In the Light of What We See

No need to enter me for anything, I still have more books than ever!

Sam (aramsamsam) 1. In the last minute I made it to Mt. Blanc (24 books). I'm a bit out of breath this year, but as always, the sight is great from up here. I have to admit though, that my 2019 mountain overshadows Mt. Blanc. I went a bit crazy book-shopping in London :)

message 7: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia | 9 comments I completed seven out of twelve books for PIkes Peak, so 8,233 miles. I definitely got distracted by library books, but hopefully next year I'll do better. I'm happy I did this challenge because I never thought much before about how few of the books I read are ones I own. The challenge has spurred me on to try reading more of the books that are already on my shelves.

message 8: by Mark (new)

Mark Baker (carstairs38) I was aiming for 12, but I made it to 43! May be the highest I've ever made it.

Natália Lopes (silkcaramel) | 163 comments 1. I've made it to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro late November, which was my original goal, but I got excited and made my way over to El Toro. I didn't reach the top by 4 books (my final count was 71), just shy of the peak, but it was my highest climb yet! I'm very very happy! On my overall GR count, I did managed 95 books, again my highest goal yet since I started reading again in 2014! 2018 was a very good year for me, and I'm hoping 2019 will be even better.

A library appeared along the way (I moved to a different town) and lured me in. I still come up a fair few miles though and would have reached Pike's Peak, since I ticked 16 books off my TBR! And I started one more, but it's still sitting sadly on the shelf for the moment...

Pamela | 109 comments I was aiming for Mt. Ararat and reached the top and then some. Read 4 extra books from my list. I was looking up at Mt. Kilimanjaro but the peak was too high. I'm pleased with my progress for 2018 with 52 books done.

Thanks for another great year Bev! No prize for me, just checking in.

message 20: by Kendyle (new)

Kendyle | 60 comments I completed my climb to the peak of Ararat in the balmy late summer days of September. I didn’t hike on with my TBR, but i completely exceeded all reading expectations this year by reading a total of 68 books. This will be a hard number to top in 2019!

Jobiska (Cindy) (jobiska) | 2 comments Hi!

I set my sights on Pike's Peak, as I am also doing the Read Harder Challenge (both 2018 and 2019), and I made it, plus some. I will plan to do at least 12 again in the coming year, and hope to use some of my TBR pile to fill out the Read Harder as well. (already did one!)
