Jan | 21026 comments Thanks Rosa!

Looking for U

message 610: by Karen (new)

Karen | 621 comments U's are tough. I can do "unlikely" with The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder (ancient Greeks and parking meters) or "undefined" (there's kind of a cityscape in the background). If neither of those work, that's fine - just trying to move us past U. :)

message 611: by Jan, Moderator (last edited Jun 26, 2019 12:48PM) (new)

Jan | 21026 comments Yep - the U's are hard so I will take Unlikely Pair for the U Karen.

I finished my assigned book for P and can take the W for Wheel
Ivy Get Your Gun (Ivy Meadows Mysteries #4) by Cindy Brown

Next up another hard one - X

Bryony (bryony46) | 386 comments I’m about to read Sunshine Over Wildflower Cottage. The house on the cover has a door, or it could be an eXit? I only just discovered this game so I’m not sure how strict the rules are.

Sunshine Over Wildflower Cottage by Milly Johnson

message 613: by Jan, Moderator (new)

Jan | 21026 comments Hi Bryony! That will work - especially since its a difficult letter. I'll mark you down and you can come back and let me know when you have finished reading it.

message 627: by Jan, Moderator (new)

Jan | 21026 comments It's a great word to use but I don't really see the guy's cheekbone in that cover Rosa. I think I'm going to give it a no-go.

what's an 'ersatz rope'? my dictionary doesn't know this word

message 635: by Denise S (last edited Jun 29, 2019 11:28AM) (new)

Denise S | 2892 comments I may be wrong but I think it is a Yiddish word, originally from German ersetzen

er·satz
/ˈerˌzäts,ˈerˌsäts/

adjective
adjective: ersatz

(of a product) made or used as a substitute, typically an inferior one, for something else.
"ersatz coffee"
synonyms: artificial, substitute, imitation, synthetic, fake, false, faux, mock, simulated; More
pseudo, sham, bogus, spurious, counterfeit, forged, pretended, so-called, plastic;
manufactured, man-made, unnatural, fabricated;
replica, reproduction, facsimile;
inferior, low-quality, poor-quality, low-grade, shoddy, substandard, unsatisfactory, adulterated;
informal phoney
"ersatz coffee"
antonyms: genuine
not real or genuine.

message 636: by Denise S (last edited Jun 29, 2019 11:33AM) (new)

Denise S | 2892 comments Ersatz can be traced back in English to 1875, but it really came into prominence during World War I. Borrowed from German, where Ersatz is a noun meaning "substitute," the word was frequently applied as an adjective in English to items like coffee (from acorns) and flour (from potatoes) - ersatz products resulting from the privations of war.

Now it is used more generally.

Jan | 21026 comments Update Next: B

message 641: by [deleted user] (new)

thank you!

yes, "Ersatz" is a word used in German, I just did not thought it had the same meaning in English. I looked at the cover closer, I think it means ersatz-rope because it's not a real rope they're using but a vine? I thought it was some special kind of rope, on my phone the cover was so small, I couldn't make it out very good

message 642: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 1573 comments My vocabulary is growing too. I had to look up what ersatz meant. In my cover, it is a rope made from ties and other small cords.

message 650: by Barb (new)

Barb | 1651 comments Jan, I'm not going to be able to read the book I'd chosen for N in the last round. It's no longer available from my library (someone either lost the the book or just never bothered to return it), so I can't get a copy. I could probably buy it for my Kindle, but I have so many ARCs from Netgalley that I need to read ASAP, I really don't want to do that. Would you like me to try to find another N item on a cover, or do you have another option?
