I am trying to find a series of Young Adult Fantasy books I read around 2012-2014. There are at least 3-4 books and they are each more than 300 pages long. (Don't hold me to this)
The first book of the series is about a girl who lives in the northern part of the continent (kind of like in a country). People there have magic, but it has been outlawed in other places, only their country allows it to be widely practiced. They have some type of winter magic that only girls practice and they all live in the same place/castle/nunnery. The whole place is surrounded by these walls.
So she doesn't have any parents who are alive. Her mom swam this river to get outside the walls and returned with her a few years later. Her mom died relatively soon after and so she never got to know who her dad was and her mom is dead.
She asks all sorts of weird questions to the head of magic there, but the questions always get answered no matter how weird they are because the head person doesn't want her to be disappointed and then run away like her mother.
She works as a bee hive tender and one day this guy shows up at their borders almost dead. They eventually nurse him back to health but I don't think they liked him very much. At least, they didn't talk to him a lot, but the main character did.
So eventually he opens up and tells her that he also has some sort of magic that he learned in this academy in the desert and you kind of have to sing with two different voices to get the magic to work. And it controls iron/metals.
He said that while he is at the academy, he had this friend who was very ambitious (also a guy, also knows magic). His friend had all sorts of plans about taking over the world and he's going around to all the places so that he can figure out all of their magic. He says that once someone discovers all the different types of magic, they will become the 'king of the world' or something like that.
He also carves the girl an apple to show her a map of the world. Anyways, they eventually leave the country through the river and goes around to try to stop his friend.
I can't remember much of the first book, but later on in the series, we find out that the girl has a twin brother who is raised in this forest where everyone communicates with their minds and can't talk. He can heal people with magic, so others kind of have to be nice to him, but they don't like that he has magic.
Anyways, they find out they are related and he teaches her how to heal people. She gets him to talk out loud. They also established a little group to save other people who have magic and are being prosecuted.
So they go on this boat to save people who have wind magic (because they are kept as slaves to help the boats sail). But instead they find this prince-ish figure who comes from the desert place where the guy trained. He was kicked out and he has two half-sisters who were sent to the academy. The problem is, the girls at the academy always get kicked out and the people who get kicked out just kind of die.
Everyone follows this guy to save his sister and there is a palace in the castle that is a feat of architecture, but they eventually figure out that the people who get kicked out of the academy have to use their magic to keep the palace together. Those people get so tired that they eventually die. Apparently, the prince-ish person's sisters were on death-duty and so they saved everyone like the sisters. The downside is, the palace collapses.
The original girl, who learned how to heal eventually heals the desert and everything becomes green again. I remember she had to actually do some sort of tap dance with her hands on the ground to heal the place. The problem is, she loses her magic completely.
After she loses her magic, she and the original apple-carving guy goes to rescue someone who is put in prison because they possess magic, or maybe it was the guy who went to prison. At the same time, there is a plague sweeping across the continent that only infects magic people. So the guy gets infected (in prison, if I remember correctly), and so he's going to die.
This is not in chronological order, but the girl eventually goes back to the winter country she came from. She discovers that the plague actually came from there. The old head magic person is very sick and is going to die (the one who answers all her questions), so a new person took over, and that person does not like her.
After that, the girl somehow gets her magic back.
The new head magic person was in charge when the ambitious conquering guy came over to demand magic. They had a 'source of power' thing and the new head broke it in half. She gave the ambitious guy half and said that was all the winter country had (to make him leave). He did, but the new head eventually learned that by breaking the source of power in half, they unleashed evil (the plague).
To stop the plague, the new head told the girl to go to the old head of magic (who is dying, but still alive). The old head taught her a bunch of magic and she was able to stop the plague?
I am not sure where in the timeline this little segment belongs, but eventually the ambitious guy from the first book, well, he finds the girl. At that point, she learns all the types of magic, so he wants her to rule the world. He takes her to this place where an ancient boat sailed to so that they can resurrect the boat and sail somewhere else.
I don't know if you guys will recognize anything in there, but thanks so much for taking to time to read through.
