Kristie | 3601 comments Alison, at least you just picked up books you really want to read and auto-buy authors, so they're books you would have gotten to anyway.

message 52: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments It is probably all to the good. What usually happens is I buy them and then never read them because I feel like I should prioritise the ARCs. This way there's probably more chance of me actually reading them.

Picking things you would have got any way is v sensible.

My ratio is not going to thank me for requesting anything I feel like. Need to be a little restrained.

Perfect!

I always prioritize other books over the ones I buy just because I want to read them too. Somehow, because I own them and know I can read them whenever I want, I always end up waiting on those.

Kristie | 3601 comments Finished another of the older books on my shelf. I keep changing my mind as to how to rate this one. There were things I really loved (emotions, characters...) and things that made me want to DNF it at times (false foreshadowing, repetition, politics...). I keep teetering between a 3 and a 4.

Us Against You (Beartown, #2) by Fredrik Backman

I've added 2 and finished 2 so far this month, so not too bad.

I really enjoyed The Psychology of Time Travel - it has an incredibly strong female cast.

not so good news...and good news ...

I added 2 more :o
Dirty Little Secrets by Jo Spain because I've seen great reviews
and

I added the excerpt of The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon in the (perhaps unfounded) hope they would grant my wish for the actual book. The good news is that I read the excerpt. yay! So that kind of means I only added one to my shelf. lol

message 59: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3601 comments Dirty Little Secrets sounds really good. It's something I might like... hmm lol

Good plan to get your wish granted! Hope it works for you.

Teehee
You should request it, Kristie (I’m such an enabler 😂)

message 61: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3601 comments hahaha

message 62: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3601 comments I'm not sure if it's fortunate or unfortunate, but Dirty Little Secrets is no longer available for request. Though I could wish for it, I've never actually had a wish approved.

I've had 2 and I am brand new so no idea how it works.

message 65: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3601 comments Well, I've gone and done it again. I requested and was approved for Home For Erring & Outcast Girls. Fortunately, it doesn't publish until July so I have plenty of time. I read her last book, Calling Me Home, and thought it was really good.

message 66: by Kristie (last edited Jan 17, 2019 07:44AM) (new)

Kristie | 3601 comments Actually, this is the second time this happened to me this month. NetGalley says the book will be published July 30th, but Goodreads says June 4th. Just went to Amazon and they say July 30th too. GR must be wrong.

Last time NetGalley changed the published date as well, so I'm guessing that was a different situation and the date actually changed.

message 67: by Thereadingbell (new)

Thereadingbell | 163 comments Can someone tell me how do I count the pages in a Netgalley book the count is not available and when I pull it up on Goodreads the page count is not there as well even when I put it on reading and try to update status it only has percentage no page totals. This is first time I encountered this with a book.

I hate when this happens, but it always makes me glad I'm a GR librarian and can fix it.

Originally Home for Erring and Outcast Girls was scheduled for a June 4th release which was changed after the book was added on GR. I fixed the date on the book, so you'll see the July 30th date now.

I've just finished my 3rd Netgalley of the month - Of Fire and Lions. It's a genre that's new to me (biblical fiction) and hasn't inspired me to pick up more in the genre or by this particularly author. Looking back it probably wasn't a good book to pick to review and I was v tempted to just not read it.

message 71: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sharon_alexandr) | 553 comments I had to Netgalley books that I thought were going to expire today (and I'm only halfway finished with one of them) but realized last night they don't actually expire until March! Now I feel a little ahead of the game :)

I just finished my 4th one so 1 more to go (not including comics, as I also got to read 2 comics as wishes, which was fun). It was my favorite yet - The Psychology of Time Travel.

I think I had two wishes granted as I don't exactly remember requesting them. lol
Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield
and
Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver

brings me up by 5 books for the month and down 4%. Ah well. I will need to focus on reading a few of the older ones in Feb

Kristie | 3601 comments I finally got around to finishing Deadly Secrets. I had to get caught up with the series before I could read it. I'm so glad I did. It was really good.

Deadly Secrets review

message 80: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments It's not been too bad a month for me. Added 7 books (read 4 of them) and posted reviews for 7 (none of which were those 4) so I'm no worse off. I do still have a stack of books finished that I need to write up a review for but at least I have notes for most of them.

I ended up re reading three of the books on my shelf this month cos I couldn't remember enough about them to review.

Well done. This gives me hope that I'll eventually get to book 13 in the Charley Davidson series (8 down 5 to go)

message 82: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3601 comments Thanks, Alison. It felt like an accomplishment to get caught up. :) I’m sure you’ll get there too. You’re more than half way!

message 83: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3601 comments So I ended January exactly where I started. I read and reviewed three and received three new titles.

Do we have a February thread? I've already acquired a new book this month.
