could you please clarify if the books have characters in common or a continuous storyline or is it just a common theme (fairytale retellings) that makes them a series?

Common theme. It is a series of box sets, where each set features approximately ten retellings of the same fairy tale.

Unfortunatelly Goodreads policy does not consider these to be a series.
