ABANDONED. Science Fiction, space travel to Mars, teens book?

Hello,

This is a book I read when I was a kid or early teens, early 80s?. I do not remember a whole lot about it, expect that it was a fairly thick book about one's travel to Mars. He lands on Mars, and goes on an exploration tour. He is able to breather somehow. Obviously the landscape is red, but he describes some buildings that were built by the Martians. At the end of one chapter, I remember him being on an upper floor of one of these buildings, and the Martians are catching up on him. As a last resort, he jumps out of the building, only to find that he will survive because of the difference in gravitational forces in Mars vs Earth.

It was a very exhilarating book. Hope you can help me find this it! Thanks.

Bulent, can you tell us about the main character - his age, kid/job/astronaut, why he traveled to Mars and with whom, etc.?
