MargieD2017 | 259 comments Definitely a geek read! I am a Star Trek Next Generation fan and have watched most episodes more times than I can count over the years. In Scalzi's novel, Star Trek references are present and usually with humor.

The story is about the crew and officers of the spaceship 'Intrepid'. The plot involves the new crew members who are usually the ones sent on away missions who are then doomed to some alien death. They are the 'red shirts'. So, the characters begin to realize that an away mission is not in their best interest and band together to discover a way to stop the eventual outcome from being their storyline. The adventure is at times humorous, filled with wild action segments that ventures into alternate timelines and alternate universes. It was a fun read for any Star Trek fan.
