Patterns of Human Inheritance
A big thing in genetic disorders are the patterns of human inheritance. Human inheritance is passing down traits from parent to offspring. Traits are inherited in human inheritance. Each trait is controlled by two alleles, and some are controlled by more. An example two alleles controlling one trait are dimples, you get one dimple allele from your mom, and another dimple allele from your dad. An example of one trait with three or more alleles is your blood type. The dominant alleles are B and A, while the recessive is O.

The Sex Chromosomes
There are 23 chromosomes pairs in a body cell. One of these are the sex chromosomes. These determine the gender of the hypothetical child. The order for boys is XY and for girls, XX. No matter what, there is a 50-50 chance for either gender. Everybody carries 1 X chromosome. Genes carry over, half from the mom, and half from the dad. Some diseases can be passed over. Color blindness is mostly found in men. Color blindness is recessive.

The Effect of Environment
A lot of characteristics and traits are determined by the environment. Height is determined by what you eat. If you eat healthy foods, you grow tall. If you eat junk food, you don’t grow as much. The way you play instruments is affected by the environment. Good physical coordination can help you play well. Good hearing can also influence this.

Examples and Causes of Genetic Disorders
Many things can cause genetic disorders. One of the main causes is being passed down from parent to offspring. Occasionally, someone will inherit a ‘messed up’ copy of a gene. This is an allele for a genetic disorder. One genetic disorder is hemophilia. Hemophilia is a sex linked trait, in which somebody’s blood cell clots and can’t produce specific proteins.

Pedigrees
A pedigree is like a family tree. Except it shows the likelihood of inheriting a genetic disorder. Geneticists use this to track the inheritance of a disorder and where you got it from.
