Criteria and Specifications Read a book that is classified as Alternative Fiction or Speculative Fiction. Explain how your book fits that designation.

Speculative fiction consists of the supernatural, futuristic or other imaginative themes. In this book, the author imagines a settlement on Mars far more advanced than any other civilization. There are elements of futuristic technology with interstellar travel. In many short stories, the Martians appear as supernatural beings as well, perhaps due to their altered state of existence after centuries of living on the Red Planet.

Oh gosh! I hate to tell you this, but I discounted Great Britain as being an island. Technically it is, but the land mass is much larger than what I was going for in the task and it contains more than one country.

I hope that you can use this book for another task.

Hey Janice. I revisited the original challenge questions, and it only mentions "island", with no other specifications. I wish this had been mentioned (which would discount New Zealand too).

I google searched if Britain was an island, and almost everywhere it says it is (with the exception of an article published in 2003).

I've also tried to fit the book in another task but alas! None exist. (I've already done the memoir one).

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments We've had several discussions about this in the discussion thread in the last few days. I have consistently disallowed Britain in this challenge and in past challenges.

Have you done Non-fiction? Is it set at least 50% in Scotland? There's a river on the cover; is there enough of a river setting? There's a train on the cover. Have you done that task?

I haven't been following the discussions. I've done the Scotland and train challenge, but yes there were plenty of river settings. I'll change it to that task now.

Thanks Janice!

Criteria and Specifications Read a book that is Realistic Fiction. Explain how the book fits this genre.

Realistic Fiction is a genre consisting of stories that could have actually occurred to people or animals in a believable setting. These stories resemble real life, and fictional characters within these stories react similarly to real people.

The Penderwick sisters, along with their dog Hound, are on summer vacations in Arundel. Their mischiefs, behaviors and well-intentioned albeit poorly thought-out plans are realistic in nature.

Faiza Sattar (fuzzyrants) | 207 comments I might have to bid adieu to this task without completing Badge 3. I'll do my best to continue with my readings on and off but it seems unlikely that I'll be able to pursue the much coveted Third Badge.

I will however continue keeping tabs on the progress of my fellow readers, esp Cherie and Janice. :)

Hope to join you guys next year. Can't wait for December gophering!
