message 163: by Trish L (new)

Trish L | 4 comments Hello, I asked for and was allocated 4 books - message 92 - but I am really, really having trouble with 3 of them. Would it be possible to scrap these and re-draw 4 more. Hopefully the new ones will be a bit less obscure. Thanks!

Trish, you can scrap the 3 books, but each trade will generate 5 new books, bringing your total to 15. Let me know what you decide.

Madeleine | 27 comments Can non-fiction books that have several sections on different countries/cultures count for one of the countries covered?

message 167: by Mome_Rath (last edited Jan 28, 2019 09:19PM) (new)

Mome_Rath | 1860 comments Trish — I understand some countries are harder than others to find books for. There are a couple of resources Diane has in these forums to help find ideas for books. The first is the link to the bookshelf for this forum (see Bookshelf in the list on the upper right). Here you can find potential books listed for each country. A second resource is the “Where We’ve Been (Master List)” link under the ATW in 80 Books World Challenge section of the Discussion forum. Books on this list that have been read by multiple readers may be more available (though admittedly sometimes it is because they are the book of the month, and are still not widely available).

As for your countries, I’m assuming Belgium is the easiest one for you to find books for. For Georgia, I enjoyed A Hero of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov, while for Kazakhstan, I found One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn a good, if grim, short read. I’m afraid I haven’t read anything yet from Chad, so I have no personal recommendations for that country.

I will check out the Bookshelf lists in this forum. I did not know about them. 15 may be a bit much for me!

Great recommendations, Mome_Rath! A somewhat easy to find and excellent book for Chad is The Roots of Heaven by Romain Gary.

Great reco of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich - such an excellent book, and I never knew it was set in Kazakhstan until you mentioned it.

message 173: by Mome_Rath (new)

Mome_Rath | 1860 comments The labor camp in the book is based on the camp Solzhenitsyn served time in, which was Ekibastuz, in what is now Kazakhstan. I didn’t realize it took place in Kazakhstan either until I looked it up after re-reading the book a couple years ago.

Each country you trade in will generate 5 more, giving you 25 more countries instead of 5. Do you still want to swap them?
