How to update your thread for a new year- Save anything you want to save, for example by posting your end-of-year results in the official challenge threads
- Edit the thread yourself by clearing the text from the old posts
- Don't delete the old posts, instead reuse them so we don't get a flurry of activity for each new post
- If you want to start a new thread instead, add a delete request to the old one (or in this thread with a link) when you've copied over everything you want to save, and if possible, also edit the thread title to include the word "delete"
- When starting a new thread, try to add most of the posts you think you'll be needing in one go, so that it won't generate as many notifications
- If you need help from mods, ask here!
Yes, for those who don't like the flood, perhaps turn off notifications for the weekend lol.
We've been really happy with how this worked out. It seems like people liked having a place they could make notes to themselves and we're immensely grateful that no one took to spamming in their thread. I know you're all amazingly considerate but it's so pleasant to have it proven time and time again.
Thank you all for another wonderful year, here's to an even better 2019!

I tried removing the text from old posts and reusing them, but it doesn't make much sense when there are comments below that are addressing empty posts... I can't delete anyone else's posts, so my thread looks really weird
Do you want me to delete everyone else's comments? I can do that, just let me know if you want to save any.
go ahead and delete all but the first two and the last one so I can start fresh, pleasethink of it as housecleaning like I'm trying to do with my TBR pile
CBRetriever wrote: "go ahead and delete all but the first two and the last one so I can start fresh, please"Do you mean all including your own? In that case it might make more sense to start a new thread, and I'll delete the old. Let me know when you've copied over what you want to save, in fact just post a new message in the thread to be deleted saying something like "delete this thread".
If anyone else has a thread with lots of posts by other people, go ahead and start a new thread and add a delete request to the old one when you've copied over everything you want to save.If you do start a new thread, try to add most of the posts you think you'll be needing in one go, so that it won't generate as many notifications, thanks!

yes, please. Go ahead and delete this one:

I get that it's a good idea to post all my new challenges close together so I don't over-notify folks, but is there a significant difference between continuing to post in my current thread versus deleting my current thread & starting a new one?
Right I’ve got that question too- can I just do a couple new posts that I’ll then edit throughout the next year??
However you want to do it is fine. The idea is just that if you have a thread like mine, with just one post per challenge and a total of less than ten posts, we'd prefer it if you update instead of start a new one.We thought most people would want to have the current stuff at the beginning, that's why we suggested editing. But the contents of the threads are totally up to the thread starter! As we can see with 2018 threads, there are many different ways people are choosing to keep track of their stuff.
We decided to keep the rules as simple as possible, that's why we haven't added all possible scenarios. The important things are:
- one thread per person (so if it's easier to start a new one, that's fine, but we'll delete the old one)
- try to keep adding of posts to a minimum, and add in batches when possible
The rest is up to you!
Could one of the mods delete Anna's two comments on mine about adding a UKL buddy read thread? I didn't add enough posts for all my challenges at the beginning. Sorry/thank you!
Kaa wrote: "Could one of the mods delete Anna's two comments on mine about adding a UKL buddy read thread? I didn't add enough posts for all my challenges at the beginning. Sorry/thank you!"Done!
Ooh, Kaa I like how you've hidden longer lists behind spoiler tags! Maybe I'll hide my covers that way next year.
@Anna: Thanks! I stole that idea from a friend in a different group who does all of her challenge posts that way. It's super helpful for keeping track of things behind the scenes, as it were.
skightly silly question but where do you put a challenge thread. i might take part in challenges next year and aren't sure
Bryce wrote: "skightly silly question but where do you put a challenge thread. i might take part in challenges next year and aren't sure"Confirming Allison's comment, personal challenge threads are in the "SciFi and Fantasy Book Challenge" folder.
Can a Mod delete my challenge thread? Thank you.https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I'm going to start a fresh challenge thread for the new year. (I copied all my posts into a thread in my secret group)
Want to update your personal challenge thread or start a brand new one? Check out the instructions at the top of this thread!
Hello wonderful mods and Happy New Year! Could one of you (no rush) delete my challenge thread please? https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Sarah, I am SO SORRY! This is entirely my fault. I was on my phone when I fixed your thread, and I forgot to update here. I hope you didn’t lose absolutely everything! Again, I am so sorry, but I don’t think there’s any way to restore your thread.
OH MY GOD!!! I'm so sorry!! I even almost asked if you were sure, but then I saw the first few posts were still from 2018, so I figured you must have made a similarly-named thread. Gosh, Sarah, I apologize. D:
The new Sarah's Rule will be confirmation before any permanent deletion of challenge threads :(
I just went through all the tabs Google would allow me to reopen (sometimes you can get GR to do weird things when you do that--I heartily recommend trying that if you lost anything permanently!!) and I can't get to it :(

Haha- it’s okay. I didn’t really need the 2019 stuff. I’ll just redo the 2020. Don’t beat yourself up about it.

Okay, good, I was wondering if I could thwart you twice!
But seriously, even if you're cool with it (and thank you for being gracious!) that's definitely not something I want to risk in the future. So, lesson learned, and I'm sorry you were the guinea pig. <3

As I said to Anna- you both do so much for us, it’s not a big deal! I still have 3 whole days left on this Holiday Vacation which is plenty of time to fix it. Heck it’ll give me something to do after the kiddo goes to bed. Seriously don’t feel bad. Stuff happens and this is small as things go.
Okay, WAY past any reasonable deadline, but I am ready to have my 2019 Challenge thread deleted.Could a mod please delete Mike's Challenges: 2019 [¡discussion welcome!], a.k.a. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
It's almost time to update your challenge threads, so here's a reminder on how to do it. First, please read msg #1 if you need to start a completely new thread for the first time, and msg #2 if you're planning on updating your current thread for 2021.If you have lots of comments in your old thread, or for any other reason want it removed, please do what's suggested in msg #2, and then also post about it here. We'll make super extra sure to delete the correct thread!
In preparation for a whole new (and hopefully better) year, could a mod please delete my old thread? I'd like to start fresh: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Angie wrote: "In preparation for a whole new (and hopefully better) year, could a mod please delete my old thread?"Done!
I'd like to have my old challenge thread deleted so I can start fresh. Finally getting a chance to dive in to the new challenges.https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Bobby, do you want me to delete the entire thread, or just the comments? I'm happy to do the latter.
Anna wrote: "Bobby, do you want me to delete the entire thread, or just the comments? I'm happy to do the latter."Anna, just the comments would be great.

Comments (by other people) deleted, you can delete the rest yourself if you don't need to reuse them.
Allison and future Anna, do not delete Bobby's thread! :D

- Each member gets one thread for all group challenges, not one thread per challenge
- Any updates you'd like to share with the group and questions for mods are to be made in the official challenge threads
- You can name it whatever you'd like as long as it's not graphic or rude, and contains your name in the title
- The name of your thread should include whether or not you'd like to allow people to comment on your thread
- Personal challenge threads will not be moderated, so please message the mods if an issue occurs
- Please try to edit your posts rather than create new ones, and keep new posts periodic (i.e. no more frequent than monthly) so that we don't fill the notifications with personal challenge updates
Have fun and good luck!!
How to start a new thread
