ABANDONED. A story about a military team waking up from suspended animation

Other than being about them trying to adjust to the new world order (or lack there-of) what else was the book about? Them trying to set up a new civilization, finding a home, learning how to survive in the new world? Was there romance or just straightforward military sci-fi? How long was it? I'm assuming it was adult and not a YA?

It was not a Young Adult book for sure, and I don't remember there being much or a romance spin to it. I just remember the military guys being amazed with the plants and wild animals. The way the author described the world was amazing.
The did interact with the natives eventually and traded ideas other than that I can't remember much else. I believe it was a New York times best seller probably sometime between 1990-1992 but I haven't been able to find it out there either.

Any ideas about the cover? Any colours or images that you remember?

The cover had lots of greenery and streams of light shining down through the trees and a small military guy surrounded by gigantic trees.
What about women in the unit? Or was it strictly an "elite" team, hence all male? (Really hoping this gets found--it's one of the--many--genres that I like to read.)

It was about a small military team (I think they were Marines) that were put in suspended animation as the countries dropped nuclear bombs on each other. They wake up several centuries later to a new world that is almost like a pre-historic work (without the dinosaurs). The only signs of mankind are various tribes they run into.
I've been thinking about this book a lot lately and would like to re-read it but I can't remember the name or author of it.
