ABANDONED. YA, Realistic Fiction, book about two brothers who have parents who fight frequently. possibly some kind of memoir?

Hello! This book was probably published in the early 2000's.

I can only remember one scene.

The younger brother is narrating a part of his childhood. His older brother and him were witnessing his parents fighting (they argued frequently), and were both very upset by this. They are building something, at the time, and the older brother takes a hammer that is nearby and purposefully brings it down on his hand/thumb, to capture his parents' attention and break up their fight.

When his parents realize his injury, they stop yelling, and rush to his side. The older brother is smiling, despite the pain, and tells his younger brother, "It was worth it".

At the time, the older brother was around 12 or 13, the younger was 9 or 10. I don't remember much about the parents but they were lower middle-class.
