Kasia So, who's up for this month's Pick-It-For-Me challenge?

What's a Pick-It-For-Me?
It's a group recommend a book thing - works just like a Secret Santa or Xmas Exchange, except the gift is replaced by a book recommendation. The names (givee-giver pairings) are randomly assigned. So whomever you get, you recommend a book for them. Preferably it should be something new and unfamiliar to that person, NOT a book from their to-read list - the point is to introduce new books and new authors. In return, you'll have a book recommended to you (by someone else). After you're done with your recommended, a short post with some feedback/mini-review would be appreciated.

For this challenge, you need either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable) or make the person who'd be doing the recommending to you your friend. On top of that, I strongly advise keeping your bookshelves updated, otherwise you might end up with a recommendation for something that you've already read...

Signing up period will remain open until ~28th.

So who's in? I know I am.

message 24: by Kasia (last edited Aug 28, 2009 04:22AM) (new)

Kasia So Shanna, I came up with 3 books for you (pick the one that sounds the most appealing for you):

Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder Dark, fast paced fantasy book, with really touching romance story. There's a lot of drama, plenty of action, a kick-ass heroine - it's all highly addictive, trust me. And if you get hooked on, there are 2 more books to follow - Poison Study is a 1st of the Study trilogy.

My Soul to Take (Soul Screamers, #1) by Rachel Vincent This one is new, recently released, like a fresh bagel - straight from the bakery and still warm. All the paranormal stuff will keep you on the edge, there's an element mystery to the story, a hot guy and a very real set of characters. Vincent gets the high-school experience just right.

Welcome To The Real World (Red Dress Ink Novels) by Carole Matthews British chic-lit in its highest form. There are so many twists to the story that it keeps you on the edge ALL THE TIME and it's hilarious on top of that all. If you want to take a break from the paranormal stuff and learn a little about music industry - this is a way to go. I had SO MUCH FUN with this one and I don't really like chic-lit.

message 25: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1243 comments Ok, Emily, I hope I'm not recommending anything you have read and just not added to your goodreads shelf, but here goes:

Since you are a Stephen King fan (as am I), and have nothing by Dean Koontz on your shelves, I am going to recommend either Life Expectancy or Odd Thomas by him. A good friend finally convinced me to give him a try and I started with Life Expectancy and absolutely loved it. Odd Thomas is equally as good, but somehow Koontz's writing is different in the Odd series. I don't know how he does it, but compared to his books outside of that series, it's like a totally different author. I guess I'm saying, if you want a typical Koontz book go with Life Expectancy.

If you just aren't feeling Koontz (or really never want to), I'm going to recommend something by Claire Cook. She's the author of Must Love Dogs, but that wasn't my favorite by her, so I'm going to recommend either Life's a Beach or Summer Blowout. She's always a good author to go to for a quick, feel good book.

If you really want a quick read and none of the above looks good at all, I'm going to recommend Boy Meets Girl by Meg Cabot. It's the second in her "Boy" series. I saw you liked the first one and in my opinion, this second book was the best one.

message 26: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Hey Karyn,
I see you have a lot of books in common with myself, so I hope what I recommend you love as much or maybe even more than I do.

The first I would like to recommend is Evermore. I saw you read some YA paranormal and this to me is one of the best out there. If you like it there is a sequel, and another is coming out in the beginning of next year.

Next thing I would choose for you is Kiss of Midnight, you like JR Ward and honestly, the Breed's by Lara Adrian are a lot alike to JR Ward's brothers. There are currently 6 in the series, the 7th comes out at the end of the year.

I saw you read some BtVS books, and this is one of the best I've read, it's Sins of the Father. Pike from the original movie comes to Sunnydale asking Buffy for help. It also has a Giles subplot it's really great. It's written well, unlike most Buffy books truthfully. It's hard to find good Buffy books these days lol!

Karyn (honestbutevil) | 43 comments lesley wrote: "Hey Karyn,

I think I'll try Kiss Of Midnight. It sounds like a series I could become addicted to.

Tammy,
The first I would like to recommend is Blood Price by Tanya Huff.

The second book is Sea Swept. It was the book that made me like Nora Roberts.

The third book is Interview With the Vampire. I really liked it.

message 28: by Annvelwis (new)

Annvelwis | 671 comments lesley,

I hope you'll like one of these:

Touch the Dark by Karen Chance
Moon Called by Patricia Briggs
The Unsung Heroby Suzanne Brockmann

message 29: by Shanna (last edited Aug 28, 2009 09:19AM) (new)

Shanna | 16 comments southpaw285,

I noticed you have a bunch of different series so I thought I would recommend two more The Luxe, the first book in The Luxe Series and Pleasure Unbound, the first book in the Demonica Series.
I also would like to recommend wherever nina lies. This one is not part of a series.

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments LibraryLass,

Wow, going through your bookshelves is like looking at mine. We have very similar tastes, and you pretty much read or at least, plans to read, what I have in mine.

Still, I was able to come up with a few.

First one, I'm recommending is a sci-fi romance, Linnea Sinclair's Gabriel's Ghost ...no don't let it scare you, I'm not a scifi reader myself but I love this book, and I have a huge crush on Sully.

Another one I think you will like is Patricia Briggs' Moon Called, the first book in her Mercedes Thompson series.

My last pick is actually a book I've read because of this challenge, C.L. Wilson's Lord of the Fading Lands.

I hope I gave you enough choices. Let me know if they don't work for you.

P.S: I made sure none of these books are highly erotic, since if I remember it correctly, you mentioned it before that that is not your thing.. :)

southpaw285 | 588 comments Hi Melissa:

First of all - I found some wonderful books on your shelves. WOW!

I hope I don't mess this up for you. Here goes.

I saw that you've read some of Susan Mallery's books, so you might like Accidentally Yours.

Looks like you ejoyed Deidre Martin's Blade series. You may also like Susan Elizabeth Phillips' Chicago Stars series. The first book is It Had To Be You.

Last, but not least - Fern Michaels Hike And Seek.

I hope I found something you will enjoy.

BTW - I really like the idea of your monthly shelf (to read). Great idea!

message 32: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1243 comments Southpaw - I'm going to go for It Had To Be You. I've been curious about Susan Elizabeth Phillips for some time since I see lots of fans of hers here on goodreads. This is the perfect excuse to try her books! Thanks for the recommendation and I'll let you know what I think!

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 1070 comments For Kathy I am suggesting a book by Sheryl Woods - Stealing Home. I hope you enjoy.

Melissa,

I love SEP's Chicago Stars series. I think you will have fun with it. Enjoy!

southpaw285 | 588 comments Hi Shanna:

I think I would like to read The Luxe to start. The others look good as well, and I may get to them.

Thanks for the recommnedation.

I'm going to go for The Unsung Hero, sounds great thanks!

message 37: by Emily (new)

Emily Greetings and salutations, Kasia! I hope that you can find something amongst my suggestions you'll enjoy.

First, I saw that you read the Vampire Academy books and enjoyed them, so I suggestion Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz. It's the first in the series and I find them to be as interesting as the VA series.

Second, I'll throw a couple of Stephen King out because...well, just because. *LoL* Salem's Lot and Carrie

And lastly, I suggest Heart Shaped Box and 20th Century Ghosts both by Joe Hill, who is Stephen King's son. I find that he's got a great sort of storytelling ability and he gets to the meat of the story quicker than King does.

Hope you find one of these to your liking, and happy reading!!

Awesome! Thanks for the selections, Melissa. I'm going to have to check my library to see which they have. I've been meaning to get a foothold into reading some Koontz but I never know where to start with an author that has SO many books out. :^D

message 39: by Kasia (new)

Kasia Emily wrote: "Greetings and salutations, Kasia! I hope that you can find something amongst my suggestions..."

Thanks Emily! It all landed on my TBR. Now the question is what should I read this month, so much good stuff to choose from... Maybe Blue Bloods? I'll keep you posted.

message 40: by Annie (new)

Annie (themadnessofhamsters) Hi Yz - I'm working on it! But my computer sounds like a plane taking off when it tries loading your profile!

message 41: by Annie (new)

Annie (themadnessofhamsters) Hi Yz - I haven't been able to open your book list at all today - tried about 10 times! I can get the first page, but not into the complete list. So I'm going to fly nearly blind! Randomly, I can look through your comments, so I've been picking ideas up from there.
Hopefully you won't have read one of them!
Paranormal: Yasmine Galenorn - Witchling. First in a series.
Historical romance: Elizabeth Elliott -
Scoundrel. One of my favourite books (which my mother has stolen, but never read!)
Young adult: Marcus Zusak - I Am the Messenger. Not at all like The book thief, but I prefer this one.
If I've failed miserably - let me know & I'll think again!

message 42: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (last edited Aug 28, 2009 05:22PM) (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Annie,

GR has been having some major bugs going on, so that might be the problem.

Anyway, I've read Witchling already, so I'm skipping that one.

I'm currently listening to the audiobook version of The Book Thief, so I'm going to add I Am The Messenger to my TBR list.

Will go hunting for Elizabeth Elliott's Scoundrel. Keeping my fingers crossed that my library has it.

Thanks for the selections Annie!

EDIT:

My library doesn't have any Elizabeth Elliott's books, so I requested Zusak's I Am the Messenger instead.

Originally, it is supposed to be only one recommended book, but I guess we can be overeager and want to give the other person plenty of choices.

Usually 2-3 books are more than enough, but you are only required to read one to complete the challenge.

message 46: by LibraryLass (last edited Aug 28, 2009 05:33PM) (new)

LibraryLass | 772 comments Sallie, I am new to this so I hope you find something out of my recommendations!

[Book: Halfway to the grave] by Jeaniene Frost
[Book: Amber beach] by [Author: Elizabeth Lowell]
[Book: The hunger games] by Suzanne Collin

and one more for luck..

[Book: All night long] by [Author: Jayne Ann Krentz]

Hope you find something out of these, if not I'll try try again ;)

OH...sorry, Stacey, you missed Kasia's deadline.

Don't worry, we have this challenge every month, so watch out for October's. In the meantime, feel free to check out the other challenges we have.

message 48: by LibraryLass (new)

LibraryLass | 772 comments Yz, I'm gonna give Moon called a go. Looks cool and is the only one I can source from our library ;)

PS Thanks for taking the time to note I don't do erotica romance BTW.

message 49: by Shanna (last edited Aug 28, 2009 06:42PM) (new)

Shanna | 16 comments Kasia thanks for the recommendations. They all sound great. I think I'm going to try for My soul to take but if i can't get my hands on it then I think I'll read poison study

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 1070 comments LibraryLass: thank you very much for the suggestions - I have decided after much pondering that I will pick to read Half Way to the Grave - I am having a thing for vampires right now so that was why I chose this one. I look forward to finding it soon. Thank you
