Tess has a strong and commanding presence. She has a gift for persuading people into doing what she wants them to do. She is good at getting to know people and uses these things to help her get people to obey her commands. She does not like to get particularly ruthless with her crew but if she has to, she can and will. The few things that can be use against her are a treasure trove and a finely made blade.

Raised in the small village of Astrakhan, Russia, Tess Volkov was raised by her mother, Mishina, her father, Kosma, and with her elder brother, Manin. For ten years after Manin was born, her parents tried to have another child. They had given up when suddenly Mishina became pregnant once again. Tess was born and her parents celebrated. They owned the largest fishing boat in the village. Tess loved to go out with her father and brother while they worked. Her mother had to trick her into doing the chores that were appropriate for a girl and young lady.
When she was 12, her father and brother took a trip down the river Volga to the Caspian Sea with several other fisherman from the village. Only her father returned. A few days after they had reached the Caspian sea they had been attacked by pirates. They had all fought against the pirates but being poor fisherman they did not stand a chance. They maimed her father by cutting off his right arm and killed the rest of the fisherman, including Manin, in front of him. Kosma survived for a month after the incident before he died of infection.
From that moment, Tess had sworn to avenge her family. She went to the coast, disguised as a man and got hired on as a cabin boy on the same pirate ship that had attacked the fishermen. Little did the captain of the ship know that she was the caught of the man whose arm she had cut off. For two years she worked her way through the ranks. When she became First Mate at the age of 16, she put into action her plan. One dark night she snuck into the Captain quarters and after telling him who she really was, killed him. The next morning, she told the crew that she was now the Captain and revealed to them that she was a woman.
Now, at the age of 22, she has captained The Knave for nearly six years. Though some had protested in the beginning, all of the crew came to accept her as captain. She recently heard of some rumors about an elixir that saved the drinker from death. This treasure sounded like something she would want, so Tess and her crew of pirates headed to Polaris.

Being Brave has it's limits,
When your being tossed into lake means you have to cover up and not show your feelings. Ross had to be brave with his family all the time and its likely for him to not cry or stand there not offended. Its easier for him to be like that since he toggled with three older brothers and he was the youngest.
Smartness isn't a gift,
He always had to be the smartest out of the dumbfounded. He read maps and ancient graphics, and he was taught by several tutors that wasted money. His mother made him the brainyac. He couldnt help but point something out or observe. It's just a perk that attaches to him all the time. And he remembers the equations his mother made him do for hours on a fabric using a good quill.
Controlling your anger is hard,
You have to deal with brothers and boys that hurt you all the time. It's harder than Ross thought when he wanted to yell at everyone. It always makes him turn a reddish-pink and he starts to go foul mouthed. That was all in the past, now he can control the anger deep inside.
Clumsy like the creator,
Ross trips over many things, it's complicated when he trips over the littlest things. He tends to spill ink all over laundry sometimes. Ross overly gets excited and knocks stuff down on accident or usually falls into water by the pier. People can give a laugh and he tends to laugh also. It's funny once you see him be a clumsy clam. He always has that smile on his face.

"Living with my older brothers and mother was nice, but not enough.
Everyone never liked our family since it all fell apart. My father was the quartermaster of the shipwreck. it's name was jinxed so long ago. It just made me feel like I will be jinxed. My mother told me it will never happen to me and I agreed with her. My mother, Lily, was the brightest and loved me out of the four. Fishing trips we done with her was nice and all but it wasnt nice. My older brother, Damian, had his fish hook dig onto my right shoulder. He was lucky i didn't die on the spot. My mother took me away from fishing trips after that. Then later on in my life, Damian, Luke, and Sky had taken me on a boat ride around the lake. It was nice until they brought us off the boundaries. We were all cowards when we entered Hangman's Noose. Lights went dark and we heard a scream. Sky was hung on the ropes and dead under seconds of suffocation. We escaped leaving him to die there and by the time we went home, my mother was broken. She punished Luke and Damian at most due to their arrogant mind. For me, she took away all of my quills. I then became a normal boy after that. People wanted to know about our adventure and everything went wrong. Then I lived in the fame for a while."
"Now i'm about twenty and my mother is still alive. Damian and Luke ventured off in the sea and was found dead in hangman's noose. It was gruesome that they dare go back. I learned my lesson and knew to not come back. That was suicide. My life was turned upside down when I turned into the newest quartermaster. I loved the seas growing up and I get to be part of the crew this time. My mother who was very proud, told me to move on in life and find true love. i didn't believe the nonsense but I nod like I will do it. I knew that was never going to come true, but a man can dream."
