Fiona Davidson | 5 comments My father read a book years ago, and he is having a fit to find the book for his Christmas present. He does not know the name, although "Blood" may be in the title. I'm a master researcher and embarrassingly, I have not been able to figure it out, either. It is a multi generational book. A family has children and they marry and move away and the chapters of the book unfold in that fashion. Revenuers are in the book. Maybe a civil war. But most confusing, is the common folk tale: A family builds their home on rocks, in the winter when they start the stove, rattlesnakes come up. Now the one story I can find has the husband killed and the woman has to be taken out of a window to escape, and that's not what happens here. My dad says," it starts out at around the end of the civil war(1865) I believe in Kentucky , the first generation has at least one son, they were out in the boonies. not thinking there was anyone else within just a few miles< until they saw chimney smoke. this other family has at least one girl(obviously), since that is how the next generation came to be. oh yes, revenuers, probably around halfway through the book, would try to catch the brothers making moonshine or the location of the still. Anyway none of them would make it out alive(the revs). they would just be buried where they would never be found. the father(third generation in, guessing), built a cabin after they had to move, maybe in Tennessee by this time, on a solid rocky area(winter, cold, stove, hot rocks, snakes wake up in a pissed off mood, the children wake up screaming, the father carried them out , then carried his wife out,(all the time being bitten by these timber rattlers a bunch of times. the mother sends one of the kids to a neighbors for help several miles away(guessing, again), and by the time they get back he was dead. Trains were in the story around 1920 or so, in southwest Virginia building the tracks. I think it had to do with Peabody coal co. The story ended up in the late 40 or early 50's. there was a lot of excitement throughout the book. wish I could remember more, but this was 20 some years ago after all, good luck." DOES THIS RING A BELL....AT ALL? Thank you for your consideration!

Revenuers: "Informal. A government agent in charge of collecting revenue, especially one responsible for halting the unlawful distilling or bootlegging of alcohol."

A long shot - When Gauley Ran Blood: A Civil War Novel by Rock Foster?

" ... We intended to cross Hughes Ferry if Gauley ran blood," said Union General Rosecrans pursuing Confederate General Floyd. The waves of war crashed through the tanquil river valley, placing the Hughes family in peril. They became pawns in the hands of generals, future presidents, warring armies and bushwhackers." -- http://www.worldcat.org/title/when-ga...

Fiona Davidson | 5 comments I looked through every Blood title that could be civil war related, and had no luck. The book you gave is allegedly first ed in 1999, so that could not be it. I'm guessing publish date of the book I'm looking for to be pre 80's, at least, but you are right, 1999 was 20 years ago! THANK YOU!!!!

Worldcat.org's advanced search might be helpful. You can enter exact words in the title and a range of publication years. It's a great tool for finding older books (which aren't easy to find with some search engines).

Is that long description in message #8 ("Olivia...") a personal resumé?

Fiona Davidson | 5 comments We call it.....a signature line. Sorry it offended. I couldn't even sleep last night thinking how bizarre it was I got yelled at for posting that. Pretty upsetting. When you hurt people's feelings or yell at them, threaten them, please wait until after the holidays. Life is hard. I've been looking for a job for ten years, finally got 3 interviews this year. Depressing persons to the point of upsetting them is really not a way to treat people.

Fiona, sorry you felt that way, but no one was yelling at you. Please re-read our comments and I think you'll agree.

We do wish you all the best with your endeavors. But please note our group rules follow a common practice on Goodreads of not allowing promotional content/links ("spam"). So I'll remove that post.
