Girl goes to have baby and dies, baby is given to rich father, sister of girl tries to get baby as is her only family. Med students have grave robbers who steal new corpses for the students to study. They find that the women in the maternity ward keep dying due to infection as they would go patient to patient and spread the infection during exams. Women that didn't go to the maternity ward were not dying. There is this historical part and the underlying story of the rich father and sister.

What time period is this (I'd guess 19th century)? Any other ideas what the setting might be? A general idea of when this book was published or when you read it would also help.
Setting was England, probably 1800's,I read it several years ago
Are you sure it was set in England? The Bone Garden takes place in Boston, but otherwise is the only book I've found so far that looks like a match for your description.
