December 2018 ~ Lisa's pick ~ Ugly Covers (like Ugly Christmas Sweaters!)

The only *rule* for this challenge is that you have to pick a book from your TBR (to be read) file. We want to decrease the size of our back lists, hence the challenge!

You can participate in this month's even if you haven't others... there's no wrong way here! Even if you don't manage to finish...half the fun is just hanging out. Happy choosing and may the odds be forever in your favor!

Michele (guilliem) | 2131 comments Clever pick idea!! I'm in...I'll be back shortly with my choice.

Nay (4ukcats) Me!

Lisa Aiello (lisaaiello) | 2460 comments I am in...just gotta choose an ugly!!

Jenn Keller (bluejenn116) | 425 comments Me too just got to find an “ugly”

message 6: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments In! *runs off to find my ugly*

message 7: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Aiello (lisaaiello) | 2460 comments Okay, so I didn't think about how hard it would be to pick an ugly book cover. For every one that I thought was ugly and considered picking, I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. (I'm actually side-eyeing the cover to Tampa, which is classic UGLY all the way...alas, it's on my TBR, but I don't yet own it).

However, I am settling for this one. The story itself looks very intriguing and it has some great reviews. The cover isn't so much ugly, as it's just not aesthetically pleasing to me. So here goes..."ugly" Christmas sweaters can still be comfy, right?

Non Friction by Morgan Parker

message 8: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments Damn! I just read a series that starts with a super ugly cover. I only read it because the reviews were calling it really good.

message 9: by Michele (new)

Michele (guilliem) | 2131 comments I'm going with Abruption by Riley Mackenzie

I feel guilty calling any cover ugly...but I gotta pick one and the book itself sounds good...

Jenn Keller (bluejenn116) | 425 comments I'm going with this one as those hands are ugly (creepy)

To Have It All by B.N. Toler

Jenn Keller (bluejenn116) | 425 comments Was not sure how to just show the book; yes I’m truly a rookie 🙄and Michele I almost chose the same book as you 😁

You could have...we could have done a BR.

To show the book cover, click "add book/author" above the comment box. Then when it brings up the box where you type in the book, you want to choose "cover" instead of "link" and it will show the cover. I was once the rookie here and these kind and patient ladies taught me the ropes so I'm happy to pay it forward...

message 13: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Keller (bluejenn116) | 425 comments Thank you Michele, I fixed it 😁

message 14: by Jean (new)

Jean | 1658 comments I love this challenge and definitely in!! Ugly covers!!! Hahahaha!! I'll find something! I do have both books that Lisa and Michele already picked......hmmmmmm......

message 15: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments Jenn, I have always hated that cover. It's def ugly.

message 16: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Keller (bluejenn116) | 425 comments I know right; honestly I don’t even know what it is about but I read a duet by this author recently that I Loved and that is the only reason I added it to my TBR I’m really not a fan of body parts on covers *shrugs*

message 17: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments I found an ugly cover that the story sounds appealing. But when I pulled up the book, someone must have alerted the author. Totally new cover that looks good. :) Still gonna read it though.

message 18: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments Found one! Wolf Spell (Wolf Trilogy, #1) by M.R. Polish

That one is quite hideous, Tessa. Good find!

Leslie | 2430 comments I found my ugly!

The Ticket The Ticket (Love Again, #1) by Heather Grace Stewart

message 24: by Nay (new)

Nay (4ukcats) Ela, there are some Listopia lists with ugly covers. I was going to post links the other day, but my computer messed up and then I didn't ever have time to do it.

Nay (4ukcats) Here are some ugly cover lists:

https://www.goodreads.com/search?utf8...

I think I also tried "cheesy covers" and got one or two other lists to choose from as well.

message 26: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments OMG, that first list. Strange Powers by LJ Smith. Sure, crappy cover but the trilogy was awesome.

message 27: by Ela (new)

Ela | 4291 comments I’m thinking of starting https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

message 28: by Jean (new)

Jean | 1658 comments I have Heller too Ela. I think that was a bev recommendation! Not sure what I'm reading for this challenge yet though.

message 29: by Ela (new)

Ela | 4291 comments Come on join me Jean! I've heard great things about that series but gotta say the covers are a bit cheesy and put offing....

message 30: by Jean (new)

Jean | 1658 comments I might Ela! But right now i'm all wrapped up in Keeping 13 and it's LONG!!!

message 31: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments I read my ugly and it wasn't pretty! *snort* I kill me!😂

The Ticket The Ticket (Love Again, #1) by Heather Grace Stewart was just ok. A bit of a snoozer and too insta-love. 3***

message 32: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Keller (bluejenn116) | 425 comments 😂😂😂😂

Ela | 4291 comments Jean wrote: "I might Ela! But right now i'm all wrapped up in Keeping 13 and it's LONG!!!"

I started 3 books and had to stop....nothing is holding my interest so I started the new JA Huss book.

message 34: by Jean (new)

Jean | 1658 comments Ela, I guess you didn't like Heller then......

Damn, I've had this one for a while. I was wondering if you were going to like it.

Ela | 4291 comments Jean wrote: "Ela, I guess you didn't like Heller then......"

That one I didn't start yet... I had some passed dues

message 37: by Jean (new)

Jean | 1658 comments Gotcha!

message 38: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments Jean, The Ticket wasn't horrible. It just wasn't anything special. So much is just "same old, same old" for me lately. It might be a nice quick read for you.

message 39: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments DNF'd at 19% Wolf Spell. I swear, the build-up of something that essential to the story was just so boring, I couldn't take reading anymore.

message 40: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) I just had a look at the cover of Wolf Spell. What a shocker. A classic of its kind.......

message 41: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments Jan130 wrote: "I just had a look at the cover of Wolf Spell. What a shocker. A classic of its kind......."

lol The blurb sounded interesting! And it had some good reviews. But the torture of just telling her her backstory was too much.

message 42: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Bad/ugly covers are fun to look at, in a slightly painful cringing kinda way. But at least you get a giggle, even if the book is crap.

message 43: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments True, besides, who can resist a guy in glasses?

message 44: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) LOL. So true ;)

message 45: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Aiello (lisaaiello) | 2460 comments 4 stars from me for Non Friction by Morgan Parker .

It really was a good story, and amazing humor/writing.

Three things came out of this - the book was enjoyable, The cover has since changed and is not ugly anymore. And, I now know why that cover was chosen and what that symbol means! Win, win, win!!!

message 46: by Michele (new)

Michele (guilliem) | 2131 comments Y’all!!! I finished Abruption! It may not be everyone’s cup of tea... but it was a perfect read for me!!! I loved it! 5 stars!

message 47: by Jean (new)

Jean | 1658 comments I can't find any books with an ugly cover! I've been searching my TBR!

message 48: by Jean (new)

Jean | 1658 comments I do have non-friction and Abruption.....
