This thread is open to discuss A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi.

Synopsis
It’s 2002, a year after 9/11. It’s an extremely turbulent time politically, but especially so for someone like Shirin, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl who’s tired of being stereotyped.

Shirin is never surprised by how horrible people can be. She’s tired of the rude stares, the degrading comments—even the physical violence—she endures as a result of her race, her religion, and the hijab she wears every day. So she’s built up protective walls and refuses to let anyone close enough to hurt her. Instead, she drowns her frustrations in music and spends her afternoons break-dancing with her brother.

But then she meets Ocean James. He’s the first person in forever who really seems to want to get to know Shirin. It terrifies her—they seem to come from two irreconcilable worlds—and Shirin has had her guard up for so long that she’s not sure she’ll ever be able to let it down

ikram (basingse) | 23 comments I've finished chapter 4 and I can relate with Shirin, as both woman and Muslim. I may not live in the country where being a Muslim is against "everything" on said country, but I can relate to some level. (view spoiler)

♛primadonna♛ (lavenderbird22) | 124 comments I've finished chapter 8.
I'm really enjoying this book so far and didn't want to stop at chapter 8.!
It's really eye-opening and shows what's probably just a small portion of what Muslim's have had to go through here since 9/11. It's heartbreaking and yet greatly written. It's such a powerful read I can't wait to keep going.

ikram (basingse) | 23 comments I've finished chapter 11 yesterday, sorry for the late update, I couldn't access discussion on my phone!

I know! (view spoiler)

Mike Forster Rothbart | 2 comments I tried to read this out loud to my kids over Thanksgiving. My 12-y.o. wasn't interested so I started reading it myself. The plot is captivating enough that I find myself sneaking ten minutes here or there to read another chapter.

I'm up to chapter 16 and I'm really really enjoying this book so far. I know that it's going to be put on my list of favorite books of all time.
It feels very relatable but at the same time explains and shows so deeply and raw the experiences that I have been privileged enough to never have to go through. Most parts make me learn and other parts make me feel very very understood. So rare in a book.!

Mike- I can't stop reading! I have to force myself to put it down to get other things done!

Which chapter are you on now?? I can't stop reading it too even at my workplace! My bad, it's so addicting and relatable.

One things is that I have said this book was going on my list of favorites but that's no longer so. I can't decide between a 3-4 star rating. 5 being too high because (view spoiler)
