Complete with 6 chapters I am LOVING this book. It truly describes the culture of Barbados, I think in the early 50's before they became independent from England. Awesome selection!!

I am sorry. I didn't get started yet. We have had all sorts of house related problems the last few days. I will try to catch up over the next couple of days.

I live on Barbados Ave here in Melbourne FL but never been to Barbados. I know a lot more about it now than I did 3 days just by reading 6 chapters.

Regarding the Buddy Read.. I have lots to read due to challenges I want to complete. I know you are really enjoying Shogun. This can wait til after Christmas or even the New Year if you want.

Oh, thank you. Yes, I would love to delay. We have so much happening right now. I would love to delay until January 1 if you don't mind.

Celia, my husband is a teacher. He goes back to work next Monday. What do you say we start our buddy read then? Also, I know you read quite a bit already... If I read 30ish pages a day is that good?

Am glancing over the first 6 chapters and then continuing.

I will start tonight. I will try to do 5 chapters tonight so that I start to catch up. Sorry.. I have been sick and not concentrating on anything well.

I only got through 3 chapters. It is probably realistic for me to stick to 30ish pages a day. My hands don't do so well with much more for dead-tree books. I wish this one was on kindle or audio!

So far I really like it. The scenes at the school with the boy worrying about the teacher and the headmaster whipping them with the belt were very vivid and made me angry. The deceased grandpa sounds like the best person in his life. It is too bad he passed away.

So many diverse characters. Love the book too. Please read at your own pace. I want you to enjoy it. I get a lot out of knowing that someone is reading with me. Sharing is optional. 😶😘

A lot of the slang here is new to me. And the word "paling" is not one I have seen before either.

where is 'paling' used?.

It was in the first 4 chapters. One place was when rocks were being thrown at the house and he was yelling at the grandma to come out from behind the paling. It felt like it should be house walls, but the dictionary says picket fence.

i just saw paling again, in Chapter 15. You're right, I never heard of that either.

Complete through Chapter 15. (Going slow, aren't I?). So far, my thoughts are:
Exactly what are the boys' parents doing in England and where is the money to take care of them.
Independence of Barbados from England is not embraced by all.
The women in the story are strong characters. Well at least Grandma and a woman named Ma.

I will have the book finished by month end. You will laugh but I am having a hard time reading this book - physically!! The binding is very tight and it takes a real effort to keep the book open!!

I have put the book on the back burner for now. I do like it but have plenty to read in the meantime. Even if we don't finish this as a buddy read, I have still enjoyed it.

Oh please don't wait for me. I think this book is going to wait for me. I can only deal with audio right now. But I know you were enjoying it.
