SOLVED. Fantasy book about a soldier/warrior who wakes up with his memory gone, brought into a city by a veiled hunter on a horse, eventually marries the queen who suffers from some mental disorder that has driven her to kill her previous husbands. [s]

Main character is a soldier, he does not have any memory of his identity except that he is dressed as a soldier. He wakes up by a tree (i think) and is found by a hunter on a horse. The hunter does not speak but leads him to a large city where he attempts to find out about his past.

He eventually ends up being married to the queen who rules the city. The queen is mentally unstable. She has killed all her previous husbands in a madness. I also seem to remember she has some form of scar/disfigurement which was caused by an attack by one of the species that inhabits the land. Some kind of half human, half animal species. The book builds up to a climax where the protagonist rallies an army to battle the human-animal species. During the course of the story the protagonist keeps trying to remember who he is and where he came from as it starts to dawn on him that he may not even be from the land he is currently in.

Didn't manage to finish the book. Can't remember why. Maybe the protagonist's situation rubbed off on me a bit. Thanks in advance to anyone who can point me in the right direction.
