Samina Boyd | 3 comments The horse with horns is mostly what I remember. I read this back in the late 90s or early 2000s, but it might have been written in the 70s or 80s. It was a paperback I found in the library at my high school and it was pretty worn and the paper was old, that's why I think it was much earlier. The cover, from what I remember, was mostly in yellow and sepia tones with some red, the woman was wearing armor, sort of reminiscent of She-Ra. Her war horse was on the cover, but it was also mentioned inside the book as having horns like a ram. I think there was a part in the novel where it describes her getting the horse, it bonded with her or something like that, kind of like that story about Alexander the Great and his horse. It was in English and I checked it out from my school library in the US.

Samina, can you tell us more about the heroine - queen/princess/warrior/aristocrat/poor, who was her enemy, romantic interest, etc.? What weapons did she use?

Can you describe her world - realistic Earth, medieval, futuristic, forests/plains/coastal/etc.?

Stephen (swynn68) | 87 comments Possibly Lynn Abbey's Rifkind series, starting with Daughter of the Bright Moon. It has a woman warrior and a horned horse. I haven't read it for ages, so I'm not sure about a bonding scene, but IIRC the horse is telepathic and such a scene would fit.

She was a mercenary type warrior. There were male characters in the same profession who were afraid of her. I'm sorry, I don't remember more about her.

The world was like Earth. In fact, I would have thought it took place on Earth in the Dark Ages except sometimes there were hints of non-Earth things and creatures, like the horses with the horns.

Yes! I think this must be it, I recognize the cover. In my mind it was more yellow than that and the horse's horns were spiraled, but I'm probably confusing it with something else. I haven't read it in forever either. Thank you! I literally could not remember anything about it except the horse had horns because I thought that was so strange.
