Mostly, but I'm not sure about the ABC challenge. I might just do the alphabetized list and later decide whether I want to do the challenge.

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 459 comments Second! :)

I did the ABC challenge in 2017. It was fun. I can recommend Sue Grafton for X!

Can it be read on it's own, or should I read the whole series? I already have an X book, but it's good to have an extra one.

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 459 comments Yes, her books can be read out of order. Every case is different and i think she only had one case that spread to another book. She is there in the last book so you always know that when the going gets tough, she survives!!

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter
My first book of the year! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I had hoped to finish it yesterday but that didn't work out for various reasons, but it's a good start of the year.

The week I'll be reading easy books, it's the last week of the school vacation so it'll be exhausting. Next week will still be busy with businesses finally having time to do all the things that they didn't have time for over the holiday season, but at least they know what they need. But then I can go back to my normal reading. The week after that I go on my Reading Retreat, one of the books I hope to read is the new Sigma Force book.

Hecause I haven't got much of a life. Lol.

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Winthrop House by Ambrose Ibsen.
A fun book. Second, and at this point last in the series. Which means I've finished my first series.

Tomorrow I'll start another shorter book, I should be able to finish it by Friday. After that I can return to my normal reading.

message 16: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Well I wasn't too far behind you so it's a pretty close race.

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Nightmare Abbey by David Longhorn.
An okay story. It started out as a ghost/demon story, but it turned into a creature-from-another-dimension feature. Usually not my thing, but it was an okay read. Though I'm not sure it was good enough for me to continue with the series.

I've already selected some books I might read during my reading retreat, but I might pick something else, it depends on my mood.

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments The Golden Egg by Donna Leon

message 19: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments I didn't read much for a couple of days, but the book I'm currently reading has grabbed me. It's Lasher by Anne Rice and it's almost 900 pages long. I'm almost at page 200, so I'm not going to finish it before my vacation, my Reading Retreat (aka the Piss Off I'm Introverting Retreat), starts. I don't want to spend most of the week on one book, so I've decided that on Monday I'll take a break from this book and start my vacation reads.

I've decided to read at least one book by Sarah Rayne. Mostly because I'm in the vacation park where, in 2011, I read my first book by Rayne and loved it. By now I've read most of them, but not all. I'll be starting the Immortal Tale books, which might be a series, but they also might not be a series. Just in case I'll be reading them in order.

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments I'm kinda jealous, a reading retreat sounds so good!

message 21: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments DoodlePanda wrote: "I'm kinda jealous, a reading retreat sounds so good!"

I've learned that I need that week in January. I'm a super introvert and from early November it's busy in the store and since early December I hadn't had much time to myself. The holidays, Christmas and New Year's, are stressful to me because of social obligations. And this year the season is topped off by a family day, tomorrow. Which is super stressful for me for more reasons than being an introvert.

So by mid January I need a week to myself. In the past my sister has joined me several times. But I've learned that I need to be by myself and do whatever I want to do. Which is usually reading, crafting/art, gaming and watching movies. My sister wants to go out and do things and I'm just not up to that.

Ghost in the Stacks I so wish I could do something like that.

message 23: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments I really wish I could sign up for Kindle Unlimited. If the Dutch Amazon (just a Kindle ebook store) offered it I would be tempted to switch (right now it doesn't have the wishlist feature, so I'm not going to switch).

message 24: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Blood Ritual by Sarah Rayne.
An okay book. It wasn't so good that I couldn't put it down, in fact I was easily distracted by other things when reading. This book was published under another name first, I think it is the earliest book by Rayne I've read so far. But it was a fun read nonetheless.

message 25: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments House of Secrets by Darcy Coates.
That was a fun and quick read. Too quick, IMHO. But there's a sequel, I've already bought it and will continue with it soon.

message 26: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments House of Secrets by Darcy Coates.
A fine conclusion to the story. Although I thought the first book was better.

Now onwards with the final read of my Reading Retreat: Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero. It's been on my TBRS (to be read soon) list for at least a year now.

message 27: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero.
A fun book. It did take a while for me to get into the story, but after that happened it was hard to put down.

This was the last book for my Reading Retreat, since Monday I've read almost 1500, so not a bad week. Now I'm going to continue with Lasher, 250 pages to go, so hopefully I can finish it on Tuesday or Wednesday, unless I go into a reading slump. But the rest of today I'm going to do some gaming and watch some TV.

message 28: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Lasher by Anne Rice.
I've finished it, finally. I liked it, but not as much as I liked the first book. There's just one more book left int he trilogy for me to read, but it'll be a while before I'm in the mood for it, I think.

message 29: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments How the Light Gets In by Louise Penny.
A good book. The overarching storyline is finally wrapped up. I'm glad, because in the last couple of books it was more important than the mystery of each separate story and it was a bit of a depressing storyline.

It'll be interesting to see how Gamache's life continues now he's retired.

message 30: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments The Splendor of Fear by Ambrose Ibsen.
A quick and fun horror story. A great in-between book, like most of Ibsen's books I've read so far.

Now onward with the latest Sigma Force novel. It got released right in time; I'm in the mood for an adventure thriller and my favourite series so far in those genres is Sigma Force.

message 31: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I've got the first Sigma Force book on my TBR, I might have to bump it up a bit.

If I'm remembering correctly, the third was the weakest in the trilogy. But, it's also the shortest, so that's something.

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Crucible by James Rollins.
A great book, I hadn't expected to finish it so soon, but it was really hard to put down.

This means that this month I've read 12 book, totaling 4755 pages. A very, very good month. Mind you, February has always been the month I read the least, so a good January is very nice.

Now, onwards with my series challenge, officially Carnival for the Dead, by David Hewson, isn't part of the Nic Costa series, but it's about one of the important characters in the series, so for me it part of the series.

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Carnival For The Dead by David Hewson.
A good story, despite it taking me almost a week to finish. I blame that on my annual January reading binge; in Februari I take it very easy as a result.

message 34: by Bianca (last edited Feb 08, 2019 11:43AM) (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments This week I finally booked the hotel in Amsterdam for a stay from March 3 until the 6th. On the 4th I'm going to Sarah Millican's show, which I'm really looking forward to. It also means extra reading time and I always treat myself to a couple of books.

I've just scrolled through my Amazon wishlist and selected 3 books: The Death of Mrs. Westaway, Call of the Jersey Devil, and Red Creek. I'll read the latter ones first, they seem like fun horror stories (what's it with me having to read horror when I'm on a trip?).

I've also come to the conclusion that's it time for a cull. I have to go through my wishlist and delete the books I'm not that interested in after all.

message 35: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments I should really go through my to-read list and remove the ones I don't want to read any more, I just never get around to it...

It can be a daunting task. I might do it one day too, but probably not any time soon.

message 37: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I do every now and then, but it has been a while.

message 38: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments The biggest danger with going through my wishlist to delete book is that I end up buying a lot of the books I don't want to delete. That happened last year.

Last night I went through my Netflix watchlist and deleted films and series I, most likely, will not watch or continue with.

message 39: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Predator's Gold by Philip Reeve.
I'm still not sure what to think of this series. None of (main) characters is especially likeable. But since it's only a 5 book series, so I only have to read 3 books, I'll probably finish it.

message 40: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments The Outlaws of Sherwood by Robin McKinley.
An enjoyable read. Though I might have read it before. One summer in the mid-90s I went through a Robin Hood phase (thanks to Alan Rickman). I read every Robin Hood book I could get my hands on and this might have been one of them. There were a couple of things that were somewhat familiar, but that might be from other books or films. So I'm not marking it as a reread.

message 41: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Island of the Mad by Laurie R. King.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The last couple of books in the Mary Russell series were okay, but that's it. I was afraid this one would go along with the previous books and kept delaying reading it. But I decided if I didn't really like this book it was time to let the series go. But I really liked it, so I'll have to see where the series goes.

message 42: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments The Haunting of Briarwych Church by Amy Cross.
First in a trilogy, enjoyable and quick. Amy Cross' books are general quick reads and I find the ideal as in-between books. This one isn't as explicit (blood and sex) and some of her other books.

message 43: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments The Creeping Shadow by Jonathan Stroud.
This was a good one. There's only one book left in the series and it's the final one. And I am very curious to see how Stroud is going to resolve the various elements.

message 44: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments The Savage Shore by David Hewson.
Okay, a bit slow.

Another series finished/up to date. Only six more to go.

Yep, happens to me too. Including at Audible. It helps to go through your wishlist more often. Netflix not so much because lately I can't sit through movies. Thus, I'm focused on just 2 or 3 series (I'm only on season 3 of NCIS!).

message 46: by Bianca (new)

Oooh, NCIS. I need to catch up on the last couple of seasons. I think it's time for my tablet to take a vacation to the US so I can watch them on Netflix US. I also need to catch up on Criminal Minds. The last couple of nights I've been watching Midsumer Murders (I'm on my second go-through of the series).

message 47: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 459 comments Hah, we watch some of the same stuff. I'm behind on Criminal Minds as well, but totally caught up with Midsumer Murders- even the second time. Also caught up with Death in Paradise, Father Brown, Blue Bloods and Miss Fisher.

message 48: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Midsomer is on tv so often on various channels that I must have seen most episodes multiple times. A couple of summers ago I did a full rewatch and now I'm slowly making my way through them again. It's nice to put on when you're not in the mood for anything difficult.

I love Death in Paradise, but haven't seen the last couple of seasons yet. I think a full rewatch will happen soon. Father Brown I like, but not enough to watch all episodes. I've never heard of Blue Bloods, but it looks like it's my thing, so I have to see if I can watch some of that. And I've watched the first season of Miss Fisher, I'll probably return to it, but it's something I need to be in the mood for.

Tonight and tomorrow night I'm going to catch up with the three latest episodes of Vera, I've watched the first episode of the latest season but not the rest. On my to-watch list is also BBC's Bodyguard, The Passenger and I Am the Night.

There's just too much interesting stuff.

message 49: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments The Retreat by Mark Edwards.
A fun and quick thriller. I usually skip thrillers and horrors which feature a family or person who have lost other family member(s), but I'm glad I got this one.

When starting I hadn't expected to finish it this month, but I did. Which means that February was an above average month and I'm now almost 1200 ahead of average so far this year.
