I have been reading a couple of downer books this month but both were interesting. The first was Playlist for the Dead by Michelle Falkoff. It's about a 16-year old boy who commits suicide but leaves a playlist for his friend to discover why he committed suicide. Each chapter has a song title for its title. You have to listen to the song for clues to his reason for suicide. It takes a long time to read a book that way but it is clever.
The second book I read was Asperger's Children: The Origins of Autism in Nazi Vienna by Edith Sheffer. It talks about Dr. Hans Asperger and how he diagnosed children with autism and they were sent to hospitals where it was determined if they lived or died. It was interesting history but painful to read.
