ABANDONED. childrens book about how life is like fudge, hard but sweet

Everyone in my first grade class got a copy of this book. (late 80s). It had a boy on the cover. I thought it came with a place for you to fill out your info. Basically the kid is hanging out with his grandfather and they buy fudge. Maybe at a general store? I cant remember what else happens but he learns a life lesson. At the end, the grandfather tells him that life is like fudge, it may be hard but it is also sweet.

Was this a picture book? If, so can you describe the illustations?

It had detailed illustrations, almost lifelike not cartoon. Also, I think the title was really long.
