I liked the one more than you, and read at least the next book. Flavia just started annoying the crap out of me and I stopped.
I love Flavia. I can relate to her clearly. I have a 12 year old daughter who is very detailed.....definitely a C-type personality.
I started this years ago and couldn't stomach Flavia, so I dropped it. Then January this year book #4 fit three challenges, so I bit the bullet and read it - and was surprised I enjoyed it. So I went back to book 1 and finished it. Flavia is still a pain, but I may be able to read more, just have to be in the right mood for her.
I enjoy Flavia a great deal, but the series goes better on audiobook as the writing isn't always even and Jayne Entwistle does an excellent Flavia. Also, the extreme sibling rivalry eventually is reduced. As for the writing, given the age of the author when he started the series and that she originally appeared in a short story, I think it's understandable. I do hope he lives long enough and healthy enough to finish the series. I've either read or listened to every one out so far.

Ugh I was annoyed with Flavia and just so much details about everything. Everything! She’s 11 years old but apparently a genius. She’s also spoiled imo. I couldn’t stand all the details about her chemistry stuff and then just sooo much detail about the town, her history of the people in her family and the townspeople too! Too much detail that I was skim reading over that in the end. Other than this fault I did like Flavia and the other characters.
The other parts of the book was good. Good mystery for my first mystery book. Not sure the timeline despite so much details. I got that her father was in school in 1920 and that it’s sometime much after WWII.
