I reread these when the movies came out and am not rereading them for this discussion, but I do recall how easy to read they are—such a great story-telling style. This is part of why I did not get into The Silmarillion and some of his other books (finished off by his son Christopher)—they have more of a stilted, historical/mythical style and less of a storytelling style.

While I LOVED Silmarilion, I know what you mean, the trilogy is vastly more stay-up-all-night-reading type of writing!
