ABANDONED. sci fi, teens participate in dream study but are transported to a new planet to survive for purpose of population control

plot details: different teens participate in a dream study/simulation. while asleep they are introduced to a new world, each study they spend a little more time in this new world, meet more people and must complete new tasks. But when they wake they are back in their real life as if nothing had changed or much time had passed. As they participate in the simulation more they are curious and excited until some of their experiences in the simulation become dangerous. Eventually they are sent back in and find that they are never brought back out... and have to stay there. they meet other teens who have also been sent there, and have to figure it out together.

I read this book when I was 12 in 1998. Cannot remember the title or author but would like to introduce to my middle school students.
