Teresa | 97 comments Gosh Ellen I didn't think much of it at all!! I agree the ending was terrible and Kris Marshall was brilliant but I thought Theo James was practiced and wooden. It didn't open up for me until the last episode and then----that ending!!! I feel robbed of the time I spent watching it.
Also I didn't realise there might be a second season. If there was it might all make sense.

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments The chemistry between Charlotte and Sydney was a bit flat when they had their romantic moments but oh my, when they quarrelled, sparks flew...
I also believe that it was a mistake to cast Theo James real wife as Mrs Campion because I did not buy his regret in the Babington wedding. He didn't seem remorseful when he turned away...
I feel robbed of the one sure thing in anything related to JA which is the HEA. I personally couldn't care less if they decide to make a season 2. I am rewriting the last quarter of the 8th episode to suit my taste and then I am done with Sanditon. lol.

message 153: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 97 comments Knew he was married to an Irish girl but didn't realise she was one of the cast. I agree. That was a mistake. Also, I'm not a prude, but I don't like sex scenes in a Jane Austen movie. I actually don't like sex scenes full stop. They interrupt the flow of the film for me. It's everyone's own opinion though on what they like and I was very disappointed in this one.

message 154: by Elin (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments I do not mind in general but the brother/sister thingy and the scene on Lady Denham's floor was just a cheap gimmick to draw attention to the serie... Totally redundant if you ask me...

message 155: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 97 comments Oh definitely!!! Andrew Davies seems to like to shock and just for the sake of it. Think of the 'coming out of the sea' scene. Will he ever realise you don't need cheap gimmicks to draw people to watch Austen adaptations. He also needs to learn to know his audience.

message 156: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 97 comments Maybe I'm too old fashioned and just too old to 'get' these adaptations.

message 157: by Elin (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments It is Andrew Davis that is old, out of fashion and definitely out of sync with his audience. The sea scene was so transparent in trying to recreate the Darcy lake scene but hit far off the mark. It made me cringed when it was shown.

message 158: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 97 comments The whole thing was out of sync for me. The idea was brilliant but when he said he had used up Austen's chapters in the first twelve minutes I was worried, and rightly so as it turned out. I agree, again, about him being out of touch.

message 159: by Elin (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments I really liked their quarrels but the ending ruined everything and I see it all in a different light now.

Sorry for the late reply, friends. I did start to watch it and enjoyed the first couple of episodes, then RL got a bit crazy and I missed a few. I had put it on series link on my DVR but then it ran out of space and missed the last two episodes. So I've deleted it and will probably buy a copy when it comes out on DVD.

I know from what I've read online that there's been quite a bit of controversy about it, especially the ending but I don't know any details about it.

Marlene | 208 comments Elin wrote: "unaustenesque ending."

What's the point of doing Austen if you don't do Austen?

message 164: by Elin (last edited Oct 28, 2019 08:10AM) (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments Exactly Marlene!
I was confident until the end that it would somehow end well so when it did not, I was shocked. I am still miffed and utterly uninterested in a second season...
A HEA is essential and the ultimate reason for reading/watching any JAFF, to end the series with heartache is unforgivable in my book. Snort!

message 165: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 97 comments Perfectly put Elin and I completely agree. I think it's the first time I've watched an Austen adaptation that left me completely cold. I found it to be a huge disappointment after all the hype.

Thanks for responding

I believe that Anji is doing it as a personal challenge, but I'm sure she wouldn't mind if you joined her in that. :) She does one for book titles and a separate one for author names.

the line is from captain Wentworth letter in persuasion.

is there any way to make someone aware of this mistake??

message 169: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 367 comments Can you put it in a review? Most authors read those but not all. You could also go to the GoodReads author page and comment there. Again, some authors don't check their page regularly. Or if you can find the author's own web page

Hi writer. As Sophia said, I'm doing two alphabet challenges, one for book titles and one for author names. I stole the idea off Chelsea, another of our members here, last year. The reason for the query about letters X and Z is that they're challenging letters to find titles for. I've done this self-imposed challenge for two years now and had to resort to picking titles that contained those letters, rather than starting with them. I managed to complete the title challenge earlier in the year but am still working on the author challenge.

Take a look at my YTD thread, and you'll hopefully get the picture!

Not quite sure where the issue you're describing is, but I can contact Joanna directly if you'll clarify with details of page and quote...

i had left Jane austen's pride and prejudice open on my desk when i happened upon a line spoken by Elizabeth Bennet near the end that resonated so perfectly with my angst. "i am half agony , half hope. Tell me that i am not too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever."

message 177: by James (new)

James S | 17 comments Lots of variations lately have had a ruined Lydia destroying sisters chances of marrying. I believe earlier variations implied if the entire family disassociated them selves from a fallen daughter the family problems were greatly lessened. Anyone know what real life back then was like for such situations?

message 178: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 111 comments whats the last event for the year on the group? don't see anything for December yet

message 179: by Elin (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments James: I have researched a little on the topic of ruined sisters and what I find is that it would have less repercussions than I initially thought.

I have read some of Harriet Wilson's biography and she mentions, in the beginning, her reasons for becoming a mistress, none of them was scorn because her sister was already a courtesan... Nothing is mentioned about her being shunned because of her sister's occupation.

There is not much information to be found which is telling in itself. The families must have covered their tracks well.
The foundling hospital allowed gentleman's daughters to deliver their baby's without their names being registered. They usually left a trinket to identify the babe in case they got the opportunity to retrieve the babe later. It seems like they went back to their families as I read that the unfortunate daughter was sent to relations in rural areas until the babe was born, delivered the babe to the foundling hospital and went home with their families.

Lydia's elopement was perhaps known in the community which would make concealment difficult but if they made a cover-up story, they could get away with it, it would seem...
Lord Byron had a daughter Alba/Allegra with a lady that worked as a governess for Mary Shelley with her daughter. Mary's concern was that someone might think the daughter was her husband's, not that the daughter existed. Byron took over the care for his daughter but she sadly died at the age of five.

I believe that the fandom's views on propriety, in general, are not exactly in tune with the real-life Regency era where one in five females in London were prostitutes in one form or another. Sex clubs, molly-houses and masquerades were found in an abundance, mistresses were taken to the theatre and lived in the respectable part of town.

I am sure that there would have been gossip but I do not believe the sisters would have been ruined for all eternity.
Elizabeth believes them to be ruined in the eyes of Mr Darcy which is not strange considering his earlier disparaging of her family, mentioning their lack of propriety as a reason to quench his attachment to her.
Mrs Bennet also lamented on their ruination but she was fond of attention in any shape or form and perhaps not the most reliable source...
In the book, they are not ruined because the marriage took place and returned Lydia to respectability. I read that approximately 40% of Regency brides were pregnant when they married which basically means that there was nothing really out of the ordinary in Lydia's case.
If they were to bring Lydia, unmarried, with child home, that would have been an entirely different story. It was not done as far as I could tell.

message 180: by James (new)

James S | 17 comments Eli - Thanks for the info. The 1 in 5 statistic is incredible. So there were hospitals to go to to deliver and get rid of the child secretly. Not much good happening for those poor children. Yikes!

Patricia | 111 comments kindle related question, does your kindle sometimes changes how long itll take you to read? When I began a book, it said it would take me over 7 hours to read it, then im 10% into the book and it suddenly goes to 30 minutes, and says that for over an hour.

Never had this before. and I usually have it set to how long chapter/book is so I can plan when I can finish a chapter when I am reading.

I kinda find this amusing.

message 184: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 367 comments My Kindle will sometimes change greatly when I first begin a book -- says "learning reading speed" -- but usually is fairly stable after the first chapters.

One exception: I sometimes "page through" a book. If an author has put out a book (on Kindle Unlimited) containing several books or maybe a series that I have already read, I will get a copy and just page through. The author gets credit for pages read.

Obviously, that method is much faster than my usual reading speed and Kindle gets confused easily.

I had a problem with the "read" status on my GR because I had not actually read the book but I finally made a Shelf called just "paged-through" and I kill the read dates so it doesn't count toward my totals.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 633 comments Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how was it solved?
Just FYI everybody - my computer crashed a week or so ago. Hubby's been able to re-install everything, but the one thing that's acting strange is GoodReads. It won't recognize my passcode, and when I've tried resetting it, it won't recognize the new passcode, either. I can only access it through my cell phone, but I'm concerned that I may not be able to get back on if I have to reboot my phone. I've contacted GoodReads help, but so far their only advice is to reset my passcode which, as I already said, doesn't work either. Naturally, when I try to set up a "new" account, Goodreads tells me there's already an account and offers to reset my passcode. AAARRRGGGHHH!

I had something similar happen a few years back. For me, it was letting it set for a few days and trying again. Apparently, GoodReads is slow to recognize new computers with old accounts. I was able to use my old password and everything worked just fine after that few days of nothing doing.

To get rid of those, James, I have to go to the bar at the top of my GR page, click My Reads, click 'want to read' and then scroll or search for the book I want to click the delete 'x' off to the right.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 633 comments Hi again, folks! I'm pleased to report that I'm posting this from my own computer today - I think I was able to access it through Facebook. (Honestly, I'm not certain, though.)

New problem. As I previously mentioned, my entire computer had crashed, so all the programs have had to be reloaded. I lost the program for downloading books from www.fanfiction.net onto my kindle. I have my kindle "email" address, so that's no problem. Could someone please give me the fanfiction link address?

Thanks, all!

Yes, it's interesting how Regency "compromise" in historical romance is not the same as what it was in actuality. I learned several years ago that anticipating wedding vows was almost expected behavior then between a betrothed couple, and that was a large part of why it was such a big scandal when an engagement was broken.

And yes, the big deal in Pride and Prejudice was that Lydia eloped with a man she was NOT betrothed to, and there was reason to believe they would not marry (Wickham deserting the militia, his debts of honor, his debts with merchants) - and this became common knowledge in Meryton due to Mrs. Bennet's lack of discretion on the subject.

wosedwew | 367 comments I have had a similar problem -- no idea why; but several books I read on the PC or tablet were not on Kindle.

I was able to get them to the Kindle by finding them in the GoodReads list on Kindle and reading from there. Then they were on the Kindle. It seemed to happen more on books from KU than those I bought.
