Demon's Librarion - Strong, Insecure Men

Ryan, the male lead in The Demon's Librarian, is a confident (if not overly confident) man. The only exception is when it comes to Chess, the female lead in the book.

I've noticed a trend of insecure strong men in some of my reading. It sounds like an oxymoron - but it works. I like how these men can handle the bad guys with ease but the right woman scares them shitless!

There are several examples that come to mind:
Any of the men in Saintcrow's Watcher series
Butch from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series
Phury from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series
and others.

What do you think about these insecure, strong men? Are you attracted to their timidness or do you just want to yell at them to KISS HER? Maybe a combo of both?

Any other men you can think of that fit this description?

A little background on me - my husband is 6' 8" and as broad as a truck! He's the stereotypical big-bad football player with a shaved head. He is one of the toughest guys I know until it comes to me and now our 1-year-old daughter. Her smile causes him to tear up and there is no such word as "No" for him when it comes to her. (nope not jealous at all :) - okay maybe a little sometimes, but it's a happy jealous)

All that being said I LOVE these strong, timid men and their stories. I guess I can relate to them and I often picture them as my husband. There are times I just want to shake them and tell them to man up and take their woman - but overall their insecurities are endearing to me.

Sebastian Wroth in No Rest for the Wicked

He's so insecure because of his size has scared women in the past. Plus he's been out of contact with people for so long. Poor guy. He's so sweet and adorable, and Kaderin is such a bitch to him. I'm not finished with the book yet, so I hope she is nicer to him later.
