Silly and stupid question, though this has been worrying me for quite some time, but is the spine of the book block supposed to not be attached to the spine but to the creases of the cover?

I wish I could help. I am happy (or doomed...) to own a copy (which I don't have nearby right now). But I don't fully understand your question. Can you elaborate? Is "crease" an official word for part of a volume? (I'm not a native speaker.) If all else fails, you could temporarily upload a photo of what you mean as your avatar (you can immediately switch back), get my attention, and thus show me... I can then compare...
