I would be so grateful to anyone who might be able to help me with the title of a book I have forgotten!! I am sure that the author is well known- female- as I seem to remember the author being described as "best-selling". The book centres around the life of a young photographer who starts receiving seemingly random photographs - until one day receives a photograph of a young, naked woman whom she believes to be herself (and who later turns out to be her long-lost, dead mother). The young woman then travels home to a small island off the coast of America (or Canada??- I can't remember!) to her childhood home, from which she ran away after it was thought her own mother left and abandoned them. The plot unfolds as more and more people disappear (almost always young women), and also involves the young woman being romantically involved to a childhood friend (who we find out has travelled to the island to discover the cause behind his own episodes of memory lapse.) It is later revealed that the childhood friend's/lover's father was responsible for the mother's death- and the youngest son has come to play out those crimes again, this time on the daughter (our main character!).
