Maggie Lyons (goodreadscommaggiel) Can anyone recommend a web designer for a site dedicated to children's/middle-grade books?

I suspect you'll find most of us do our own.

The main choice for beginners is Blogger, which is provided by Google, which may not be the best choice at present given the changes approaching for Google+ accounts, or WordPress (WP). I use both. I think WP has greater potential for development once you've got going.

Sign up for a free wordpress site at Wordpress.com. Best choice of username is your author name.

You can get going with pages and posts straight away using the default theme, then as you learn you can get a prettier one, and do things with sidebars and widgets.

Pages are for static information, like a page for your book(s). Posts are for news items, like new releases, special offers, and all the other stuff we end up talking about to the people who visit.

Once you've got something you like, you can tell people about it. Although it's 'live' as soon as you publish it, nobody will find it until you start telling people about it, so you can play at setting up for as long as you like.

You could compare my old, original website http://jemimapett.wordpress.com (not updated for a few years but I think it's still there) with my current one http://jemimapett.com if you like.

I was going to add something here, but I think Jemima covered it well. I started with Blogger, and haven't gotten it changed yet, but I will second her recommendation that you go with WP. Either way, buy your domain name to remove the "blogger" or "wordpress" from the URL, which will make it both more professional and easier to find.

Vanessa Gonzales at nightowlfreelance.com. She's a one-woman show and she's great. Very knowledgeable. My website is patriciamatherparker.com. BUT it needs to be updated so don't judge only from what you might see there. Try Vanessa. She's fun to work with.
