Chapters 1-10

I'm enjoying this so far. I like Tempe's character, I can't help but compare her to the version from the show. I didn't realize this book takes place in 1994, that's so long ago. I'm interested to see how the forensics will be different compared to modern books/shows. The case itself is pretty interesting, I wonder if Tempe is right and the three murders are connected. Claudel doesn't seem to like Tempe very much, I'm surprised he agreed to let her come along as they look for the potential suspect.

So I definitely think Tempe is right at this point and they have a serial killer. There's no way multiple people are killing these women in the same way. After finding that next body at least she seems to be closer to convincing the cops she's right. I don't know what Gabby's deal is and get why Tempe snapped at her.

I'm glad people are finally listening to Tempe and taking her theory seriously, well not really with Claudel but everyone else is. I wonder if she's right that maybe Gabby's stalker is the killer? Seems possible after she found that drawing but it seems convenient if it's all the same person.

So ultimately Gabby's stalker and the killer were one and the same, she just unfortunately had two stalkers. I feel bad that Gabby ended up getting killed. That confrontation between Fortier and Tempe in her home was terrifying, he definitely got the drop on her. I'm glad she was able to stop him and that Claudel ended up realizing she wasn't a bad person. I'm interested to see where Tempe goes next.

I'm listening to this audio and my library only had the abridged version (which I dislike, because the narrator seems more like a virtual reader than an actual person). Hopefully I have a better time with the other books. This version is broken down into parts.

Part 1
(view spoiler)[I think I'm having a hard time getting her personally due to the narrator, so I won't comment on that. In this part Temperance is called to a scene after remains are found and realizes that the remains are pretty fresh, and the individual was dismembered. She thinks that it falls in line with some other cases that are similar. And now we're left to wonder if she is correct in thinking they may be connected.

She's also trying to carve out time for a personal life. She's been trying to explore Quebec and hasn't figured out a good work life balance since accepting this job.

For the case: I'm interested to see what else this killer is going to do by the end.
For her personal life: I'm hope that we get more details about her divorce and why her daughter isn't living with her. I figure it has something to do with alcohol use since her drinking was mentioned. (hide spoiler)]

I had to go back and listen to the end of part 1 again, because I thought I remembered something I wanted to say about Gabby. (view spoiler)[ I found her interest in Tempe's case weird and then the fact that she wanted her to go look at the prostitutes that were a part of her project.

It seems crazy, but it made me think she knows something or suspects someone. (hide spoiler)]

Part 2

(view spoiler)[ I need more info on why Claudel doesn't like Tempe. It has to be something, because his contempt is pretty obvious, so much so that he is not willing to even take what she's saying about the killer into consideration. If it wasn't for the others, he definitely wouldn't listened to her.

We also have the call from Gabby where she seems afraid, which takes me back to my other thoughts about her. If she doesn't know something, she definitely suspects something, so why isn't she being more open about it.

Then Tempe finds her photo with the X.

Now I wonder if they guy that used the victim's card at the ATM is actually the killer. Is he the same man that Gabby was talking about that has made her uncomfortable or someone else? I definitely agree that things would be too neat if the killer is the same person Gabby was talking about. The only way this will make since to me is if the killer was already planning on going after Tempe and people she cares about anyway. (hide spoiler)]

Part 3

I first want to say that so far, I'm not liking anyone in this book, but Tempe. Claudel doesn't seem to take her seriously, but even though the other's listen they still don't seem to completely respect her or maybe that's just the way it comes across with the tone of this narrator. (view spoiler)[ I mean Office/Detective Ryan actually responds, but he makes comments that makes it seem like he'd rather be anywhere else.

Besides that when this starts Gabby hasn't checked in and Tempe is worried, especially after Gabby told her about the guy who's been stalking her. She goes out to ask questions of people don't want to talk, and when she finds someone who does it doesn't really yield enough info to figure out where Gabby might be. Then Gabby calls pissed that Tempe when looking for her.

I guess I wish I understood their relationship, because with friends like these...

Anyway, the killer seems to be fixated on Tempe by the end of this part. I mean there was already a photo found of her with the X before this, but then someone has actually been to her house and left her a grisly present.

So now I'm left wondering what the heck is Gabby up to and why is the killer seeming to be targeting Tempe? And why in the ever-loving world did they publish the pictures of the people working the crimes with the articles? I've never understood that.

I think I'd prefer to stay anonymous or at least if you have to say my name just say Dr. So and So without the photo. Make them work for more info if they want it. (hide spoiler)]

Part 4
(view spoiler)[ Gabby shows up afraid, stays with Tempe and then she's gone again. Only to be found murdered.

This still left me wondering what type of friendship they had, because even though Tempe said they were best friends it didn't feel that way.

The bodies are piling up and I don't know if they are any closer to making an arrest.

Did the killer get into the house or did Gabby leave and he snatched her up? (hide spoiler)]

Part 5

I think that for most of the book the police officers/detectives underestimated Tempe and had they taken her seriously sooner they may have caught the killer before Gabby was murdered.

Overall, the reading felt emotionless, but I'm glad they finally figured out who the killer was. Dude was very sadistic.

Back to Gabby, she just had bad juju coming her way no matter how you look it. One crazy due stalking her, and the other after her due to her relationship with Tempe.

Katy finally shows up and I wonder going forward if she'll be in the picture more and if we'll actually meet the ex? Also, will Claudel stay civil since he seemed to mellow a bit by the end of this book? I guess time will tell. (hide spoiler)]

Abridged versions always leave me confused and not enjoying a book as much as I usually would. They cut out all the stuff that gets you to like the characters and fill in the little plot holes. Hopefully you'll be able to get the full versions for the others.

I hope so because it definitely affected my enjoyment. It reminded me why I usually never read them in the first place. This the 2nd one I've read in over 10+ years.

I realized my mistake. I only searched Libby and didn't look on Hoopla. On libby it looks like my library only has the abridged versions at least for book 1 & 2. Went to Hoopla and they have both versions, so I will search Hoopla first moving forward.

If you have an Everand subscription (formerly Scribd), they have the audiobooks for most of the books in the series. They have both the unabridged and abridged versions for a lot of them, so you'd just have to pick the correct version.

This is interesting so far. I wonder what Brennan discovered about the old bones that has her looking stuff up. I'm guessing the woman's ancestry is different than the records say as it was the skull that clued Brennan in. The present day case is pretty interesting too, who would kill those babies so viciously? And why?

Not much more of the old bones case, hopefully we find out more about what went into Brennan's report soon. The monkey island thing was really neat, I'm curious about the two bodies Brennan discovered. And what's the deal with this commune?

This is getting really interesting now that all of these bodies are ending up being connected. The info about the commune from Kathryn is so strange. And now Brennan's sister may be caught up in it? Hopefully she's ok. Also, can I say I was heartbroken when I thought Brennan's cat was killed, I'm so glad Birdie is ok (still sad for whatever cat that was though).

So much happened in these last few chapters. So it turns out Daisy wasn't involved (like Brennan I thought she was) and it was actually her brother who was in the cult. And I had a feeling the woman El that was with Kathryn that day was involved somehow, wasn't expecting her to be running the whole show though. I'm glad Brennan managed to find her sister and they all ended up ok. Overall I enjoyed this one and I'm looking forward to reading the third book.

This one is good so far. The biker storyline is pretty interesting and I'm curious where that's going to go. I wonder who the mysterious third partial skeleton they found is. Also, all this stuff going on with Ryan? I don't believe it. It's out of nowhere for him to be dirty like that, something else has to be going on. Maybe he's been framed? Or is it a cover for something?

So Tempe has identified the mystery third skeleton as a teenage girl who was killed quite a while ago, but how does she fit in with the other murders? Was she killed by a biker? Something else? And I agree with Tempe that this latest murder doesn't seem to fit with the others? I wonder what the suspect will tell her since he wants to talk to her.

I still wonder what the connection is between Savannah and these bikers. Which of them killed her and why? Also I hate this Crease guy, he's slimy. And now it seems like he stole photos from Brennan's house.

Ryan being undercover makes so much more sense then him being a corrupt cop. Hopefully he won't be gone too long. That shootout at the biker funeral was crazy. I'm glad Kit ended up being ok after being shot as that was a scary moment. Overall this was a good read and I'm looking forward to picking up the next book.

This is interesting so far. It's terrible that Bertrand was on the plane that crashed, I liked his character and now he's dead (presumably since his body hasn't been identified yet). I wonder what the deal is with this foot Tempe found, it seems like it may not belong to a crash victim? So maybe there's another crime scene nearby? And now they're trying to set her up like she's done something wrong?

I'm glad Tempe didn't give up and that she kept at this case until she got into that lodge. And now she's found several bodies, what the heck was going on in there? And what is the deal with the senator being involved in it all? I feel bad for Ryan that Bertrand's body was found, I had hoped he made it out somehow.

I had not expected cannibals to be what was behind all the deaths. That's so creepy. And the lieutenant governor was involved which is why he tried to frame Tempe for stealing evidence. I'm glad everyone was caught in the end. And that was a scare there with Boyd being shot and not showing up again until the last chapter. I'm glad the dog made it. Overall I enjoyed this one.

This case is very different from the ones Tempe normally works. The judicial system in Guatemala is so different from the US and Canada. And without the bones, I'm not sure how much Tempe will actually be able to do? Hopefully they can figure out a way to get her access.

I'm surprised the ambassador's daughter is alive, I assumed she was going to be the one in the septic tank. She definitely has issues though and the mother isn't really handling them well. I do wonder why Tempe wasn't allowed much access to the septic tank body but was allowed full access to the girl found in the ravine?

So all the missing girls have been identified now. I'm guessing Patricia was having an affair with the ambassador and that probably had something to do with why she was killed. Maybe that has something to do with what the reporter was investigating and why he was killed?

Ok so pretty much none of the deaths were connected. I expected some of them to be. The whole stem cells thing was interesting and I liked how Tempe figured it out. I'm glad she made it out of that situation at the morgue ok. Overall I enjoyed this one although the back and forth with Tempe's attraction to Ryan and Galiano got a little old.
