Stories of Magic, Desire and the Fantastic
By Silvia Moreno-Garcia
3 stars

I looked up Canadian horror and found a short story collection mainly based in Mexico. Many stories are definitely magical realism, which I’m not a fan of, but there are some dark fantasy gems. Some stories are sad, some sassy, some quite creepy. Stories are set in the past, the present and near future. It is a bit confusing trying to read through, take a break between. The stories are often based on Mexican legends, so research breaks can be useful as well. All stories are understandable though (beyond the mystery of magic.) I’m intrigued to read one of her novels, see how characters and plots could develop with more time, but short story collections are sometimes the most creative.

Karin | 9243 comments I've never read her, but then this type of fiction is not my cup of tea. It's to bad you didn't find one you liked better :).

Cora (corareading) | 1921 comments I have read two of her novels: Signal to Noise and Certain Dark things. Both were set in Mexico City. Signal to Noise involves teens/young adults who dabble in spells and magic and how it affects their friendships. Certain Dark Things is a vampire novel based on Mexican folklore.
