Did you refer to the 168yr ol book?

message 1453: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments I didn't use any book. I used the SPPMM, Social Proximity Probabilistic Match Method.

message 1455: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments Ha ha! You've not heard of it? It's simple really. You socialise, and probably eventually a suitable person will become your victim.

👑 Denmark’s Queen just stripped 4 of her grandchildren of their royal titles so that they can “shape their own existence.”

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments Today I learned that my friend Tim has died. He worked at the company I joined for my first job. His knowledge helped me settle in, and he in particular made me feel welcome.

He had terminal cancer, so I knew the end was coming soon, but even so it has hit hard. Here is a saying he often uttered:

"Of all the fishes in the sea
The herring is the one for me"

Let it serve as his epitaph.

Paralyzed Emotions (paralyzed_emotions) | 40 comments So sorry for your loss. Seems you have some amazing memories to look back on.

message 1476: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments Thanks guys. Yes, it's strange what memories come back from over forty years ago.

message 1477: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments UPDATE:

The herring utterance from Tim is from a Scottish children's song ....

https://www.mamalisa.com/?t=es&p=...

I found it straightaway online, so my previous attempt to find it must have been pre-internet! The source is no surprise: herring fishing was a major industry in Scotland.

That is so lovely. Thanks for sharing.

message 1479: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments FURTHER UPDATE:

Further investigations have revealed that the herring song is actually well known, in England as well as Scotland. There are indeed many versions on YouTube, like this:

https://thebarabaraband.bandcamp.com/...

How have I spent my entire life in ignorance of this song ???

message 1481: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments The frog on the log?

message 1482: by Paralyzed (new)

Paralyzed Emotions (paralyzed_emotions) | 40 comments yeah, I never knew the name of it...I just googled it. The hole in the bottom of the sea. I've sung several variations. But its all the same concept.

Paralyzed Emotions (paralyzed_emotions) | 40 comments And over here in the US, the song verses vary depending on where you live. I think the longest one I participated in was over 40 objects! Sang it in girl scouts, and when I was a preschool teacher.

message 1490: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments 40 is certainly a lot! Popular songs have always mutated, and now do it even faster. I blame the internet ......
