There is an English saying: "Where there's muck there's brass". To which I add my writing: Where there's brass, there are criminals.

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments Of course cardboard does not grow on trees (although it is made from trees).

What a sweet surprise for this city!

A malfunction at a Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate factory in Switzerland caused tiny pieces of cocoa to resemble snow falling to the ground in the town of Olten.

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments Good news
For shrews ....

Elephant shrews had not been seen since 1968, but now a sighting in Djibouti. Traps were baited with peanut butter, and one shrew was tempted to come out of hiding.

Did you miss the chocolate rain?

message 1015: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments Unfortunately yes. Lindt is one of my favourite brands.

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments An elephant shrew lives in Djibouti or surrounding area. They are apparently related to the elephant, though they are MUCH smaller, and have no trunk.

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments Sunday Question: Did Soviet leader Nikita Khruschev appear on an American TV gameshow?

message 1021: by Grasshopper, Administrator (new)

Grasshopper Bot (daisyking) | 6903 comments Mod
You tell me!

message 1022: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments Sadly he did not. But a game show did have a Khruschev impersonator, who arrived wearing a bag over his head, and was then revealed to the watching millions. Obviously he was similar enough to be remembered afterwards, and then got promoted to the real thing! Of course the real Nikita would have been torn to pieces by the patriotic American audience.

The US CDC's annual survey of teenagers finds:

▪︎ Teens are only using condoms about half the time when having sex
▪︎ They're not always wearing seat belts when they drive
▪︎ More than a third admit to texting while driving
▪︎ A third are vaping https://t.co/qC4XTtH7UW

Word on the street is that publishing houses are funnelling resources into research for strengthening booksmell, so that the scent is just as rich, potent and exhilarating even through facemasks. Godspeed, bookmongers!
(Please sniff responsibly.)

message 1036: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments Booksmell??? Is that even a word? Maybe in Newspeak ....

I do love the aroma of a good book, or even a bad one. So far, the ebooks are odourless, but probably digital smells are not far off.

message 1041: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith | 3030 comments An assignment for my fairy tales course ....

Mrs Bluebeard

The key was rather rusty, but eventually it turned. She opened the door, and beheld a ghastly sight. There, hanging, were a dozen deceased androids. They had been savagely mutilated, their limbs gashed and twisted, oil dripping into pools on the floor. Only then did she realise the true horror of her situation: her husband was not just a serial killer, but he had a taste for silicon-based lifeforms. She started to swoon: oh why had she not listened to her mother, and married the nice vicar instead?
