I don't remember thinking any of the books I read were messed up. Perhaps I was just lucky. This was before Roald Dahl, I think his would have made me think that.

Actually I did read his adult stories, in "Tales of the unexpected" and "Kiss kiss", when I was a teenager. They gave me some nightmares.
