Susie My highest was last year at 114. I’ve read 85 so far this year so I don’t think I’ll top last year. I’m working five days now so my reading has slowed down a little. I think I’ll make it to 100.

message 2: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments Lol, not sure why I am bothering to respond because I know mine is no where near the highest. I read 63 last year and that was my record. I think I'll be in that vicinity this year as well.

Susie, that's impressive! Not sure what's more impressive - reading 114 books or reading 100 while working 5 days a week. Has to be the latter.

message 3: by Jess (new)

Jess Penhallow | 53 comments I have so far read 42 books this year. Less than a lot of people here but much more than I've ever read before. I'd love to reach 50 by the end of the year.

message 4: by Susie (new)

Susie I know Megalion reads up near the 300 mark. Olivermagnus too? Introducing audio in to my life has doubled my reading, and that’s all because of PBT. I am so thankful that you invited me here Anita.

Way to go, Jess!!! It's very cool that you are achieving a new personal best . . .awesome!!

We are so thankful you are here, Susie! I'm glad PBT helped you achieve new reading heights. I'm still impressed though . . .

message 7: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12914 comments Last year I read 100 books. So now it’s my thing that I tell people I read about 100 bucks a year. But truth be told, I made my goal at 85 and I’ve only been about five bucks ahead, seven at most, this entire year. The weight of ink took me a long time, so I could be even lower. I think I’m going to average this year around 90 to 95. If that. But I guess we’ll see!

message 8: by Hebah (new)

Hebah (quietdissident) | 675 comments I used to hover around 50 books a year, and then I hit library school. One semester I had a readers advisory class (think: knowing how to recommend books to people and having a broad overview of different genres to know how to have those conversations) and realized I had read around 30 books in the span of one semester, at which point 50 books for the year seemed a silly goal. So I've been hovering around 100 books a year for the last few years and have been inching the needle up each year; my goal is 115 for this year.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

This is the first year I have actually kept count and that is in part due to Goodreads challenge. I've just never paid attention, only continued to read.:) I will definitely meet the goal I set for myself this year and likely surpass it.

message 10: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8413 comments 2017 was my top year with 217 books ... BUT ...
I was doing a Caldecott challenge in another group in 2016-2017 and about 30 of those books in 2017 were picture books.

So far this year I've read 142 books. Looks like I'll be at about 175 - 180 books for the year.

Audiobooks definitely have doubled my reading.

message 11: by Jgrace (new)

Jgrace | 3937 comments I always have trouble with this question because I reread so often. I don't usually keep track of rereads. Last year my GR count of 'new' books was 102 , but that included at least a dozen short stories. Of course it didn't include I-don't-know-how-many books that I reread from beginning to end or most of the volumes of poetry that I dip into now and then.

Audiobooks have definitely increased my count. I 'read' more audio than print these days. I'm more committed to doing a review or writing down my thoughts about everything I've read than to a goal of high numbers.

message 12: by Joanne (last edited Oct 15, 2018 10:30AM) (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12569 comments Last year I read 75-and so I set my goal this year at 125 and Gr's says that am 14 book ahead of the challenge. Before you go telling me your impressed-I confess that for the last few years I have been pretty immobile and reading has been my escape. I have a few "chunksters" on my night stand right now so I'll probably slow down these next few months.

message 13: by Rachel N. (new)

Rachel N. | 2237 comments Last year I read 118 which is the most I've read in one year since I've been keeping track. I'll definitely meet my goal of 75 for this year.

message 14: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments I’ve never kept track until this year. I’ve read 98 books so far and my goal was 100 books for the year so I’m definitely making that. I’ve slowed down a ton thanks to live getting in the way right now.

message 15: by annapi (new)

annapi | 5505 comments Since I started keeping track in 2007, the most books I read in a year was 222 books in 2009. That year I set myself a goal to finish 200 books, just to see if I could, and was pleased to exceed it.

Every year I set myself a goal of 150, and this year to date GR says I am 9 books ahead of schedule - I have so far finished 127.

message 16: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4100 comments The Goodreads challenge is the only way I keep track. In the last two years I did 48 and 52, but this year I’m on 95 so far. My embroidery is languishing, though!

message 17: by Karin (last edited Oct 15, 2018 01:04PM) (new)

Karin | 9210 comments If we mean in my entire reading life, I have no idea as I most certainly did not keep track when I was younger. I doubt I have every read over 200 full length novels and nonfiction books (if we count short books you read to kids or younger siblings that are significantly younger than you, then of course). If I have, it was in my youth since my friends didn't' live in walking distance one I hit high school (at least not in my home town).

However, it has fluctuated widely over the course of my life, from very low due to child raising or going to university (I could not read for pleasure during a semester because once engrossed in a good book, I would have neglected my college work--I didn't care about studying or doing homework much when I was in high school).

I do know I have read well over 100, though.

message 20: by Joi (last edited Oct 15, 2018 03:18PM) (new)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments The past couple years have been my all-time high at 71 and 72 books. Since I started keeping track around 2012, I would normally try for 50. I never started making or exceeding this goal until I started listening to audiobooks- and thanks to audios, my goals now are more on the 75 book range. This year was was particularly busy so my goal was lower (60) but I think I will bump my goal back up to 75 next year.

I think the general trend, is thanks to PBT- many of us read much more!
The "downside" is many of our TBR lists are insanely longer because of PBT, lol.

message 21: by Amy N. (new)

Amy N. | 256 comments I thought last year's number was 159, but I just checked and it said 174... not sure where all the extras came from. This year will probably be more like 120-130. I only started keeping track in 2016, and that was also the year I really started reading again. There were a few years after I graduated college where the only things I read were comic books, or nothing at all.

When I was a young'un, though, I probably read hundreds of books a year. No way to tell now, of course, but I remember going through my school and local library like a wildfire. I'd love to be able to read 200+ but I doubt that will happen.

message 22: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11678 comments I'm going on memory. I've only really kept track since joining shelfari in 2007. I don't recall the year, but I think I read 169 one year. I'm not quite on track to hit that this year, but I might be pretty close. I'm actually hoping I'll get there! (My goal was 155 - a little more realistic based on more recent years - but I think I'm 12 ahead of that goal, or close to that.)

message 23: by Idit (last edited Oct 16, 2018 03:58AM) (new)

Idit | 1028 comments I used to read lots, and reread lots, but in the last decade and a bit (kids, other hobbies) not so much.
The last few years I've noticed I'm reading tons of fiction, but mostly rubbish, and so decided to make a conscious effort this year to actually read good books. It's been great. I've put my reading challenge for a reasonable 25, but changed it to 50 and managed to finish that too. I'm hoping to reach 60, and to continue next year.
I do have to admit that beside being a source of inspiration, Goodreads wastes quite a bit of my reading time. My reading peaked around March-April, but slowed down as I started looking at lists and reading reviews

message 24: by Meli (new)

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments I am over 20 this year, and this is the first time I've tracked my reading like that using the challenge on Goodreads.

I think 26 or 2 / month is probably my max unless I introduce more short books and graphic novels.
Next year will likely be much less based on the challenge I have ironed out for next year --> Shakespeare plays and their adaptations. Not as much "light" reading as I've enjoyed this year.

message 25: by Olivermagnus (new)

Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4766 comments Last year was my all-time record....340. However, I'm retired and reading is what I do, often to the exclusion of other social activities.

This year I promised myself I would read whenever possible but try to fit in some other activities. I took up golf and while I'm not that good I made some improvements. I had a couple pars and even one birdie. It's something my husband and I can do together that we both like. I've done lots of walking this year but I absolutely have to have an audiobook to enjoy it.

Anyway.......I've read 235 books so far this year. I love to read and I feel lucky that I can visualize the characters in a way that makes them so real to me.

message 26: by Critterbee❇ (new)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 418 comments Reading is my absolute favourite thing to do! I never counted before goodreads.
I got an ereader, and can read books a lot faster with it, although I still like print books and audio. I count every book that I read, including craft and cookbooks (where not every single word is read), graphic novels, novellas, picture books, etc. My count so far this year is 325, which is high for me. Last year I read 331, and 217 and 266 the two years year before.

message 27: by Susie (new)

Susie I am so impressed!

message 28: by Sushicat (new)

Sushicat | 843 comments I’ve always had a book with me wherever I go. In my count I include audiobooks, graphic novels and novellas, but no reference books like cookbooks or craft books. The highest count in the last couple of years is somewhere around 230. A normal year is about 180.

message 29: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4100 comments Seriously impressive! I don’t think I’d hit that even if I didn’t work full time - and I read quickly too. Too much of a butterfly brain

message 30: by Joni (new)

Joni | 626 comments I am at my highest that I can possibly remember. Currently at 91 with 92, 93 & 94 in the works. My goal for the year is 100. I’m sure I will make that.

message 31: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments I broke 100 one year, back in 2009. I moved to a new place so I didn't know anyone yet, I was just working and not going to school on top of it, and I read a lot of fairly trashy books (lots of Nora Roberts and Sookie Stackhouse).

The last few years I have been in the 60-80 range, with my December full of trashy Christmas romance! lol. Also, audiobooks have made it possible for me to keep my reading up despite work and school. 50 out of my 67 books so far this year have been audio.

message 33: by Critterbee❇ (new)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 418 comments I like to review cook, craft and children's picture books, but perhaps I can date them so that they do not fall into my yearly count. I would still count novellas, graphic novels and audio, and also get a better count of books. Maybe I will do that next year.

message 34: by Theresa (last edited Oct 17, 2018 03:08PM) (new)

Theresa | 15520 comments Well, I can only go by my total from last year - 182 books - as that was the first year where I actually kept track of every single book I read, serious, fluff, comfort re-reads. That's probably pretty normal - I did not feel like I read more books than I normally would in a given year. Last year I had to extend my GR Challenge goal at least 3 maybe 4 times! Stopped extending when I put it at 175, and I still surpassed that.

This year I set goal as 150 and I'm at 147 ... will pass that goal by next week.

I live in NYC and commute to work, meetings, everything by subway and bus. Means I get a lot of reading done. I also read pretty quickly. And I love to read so read everywhere - when waiting for theater or opera to start, while eating lunch, standing on a bank line, wherever. I also don't read magazines, and mostly only glance through headlines and scan newspapers. I don't do audio books at all - don't like them. Much prefer reading books.

message 35: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tstan) | 1261 comments I’ve reached a new record this year. 242 so far. But...lots have been short, and my job is 11 hour shifts at home, so I listen a lot.

message 36: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11678 comments Theresa wrote: "I also don't read magazines, and mostly only glance through headlines and scan newspapers...."

I used to subscribe to a few magazines, and I enjoyed reading them... I just rarely took time to because I was always spending my free time on books. After falling about 3 years behind, I finally cancelled them. Not sure how many years behind I am now, but I will slowly make my way through the ones I have! Very very slowly....

Ha ha, that's one of my complaints - - Goodreads cuts into my reading time. But it's soooo fun to interact with other readers, so cutting it out is just not going to happen. Now, if I watched less baseball I could probably read 100 books, but who are we kidding?

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments Last year was my all-time record (since I started keeping track in 2007)--I read 40 last year. Usually I'm nowhere near that. I'm lucky if I hit 25 in a year. But I almost never do audio books and I work a full-time job and 2 part-time jobs so there's that.

message 39: by AsimovsZeroth (new)

AsimovsZeroth (asimovszerothlaw) | 436 comments Since I started tracking again, I think my top is 73 in a year. Which is shameful compared to the number I used to burn through. I used to read to the exclusion of nearly all other activities. Not so much the last few years. Life has gotten in the way.

So far I'm way behind my goal of 80 books this year. I've read 48, which means I'm at least 16 books behind schedule and 15 of those 48 books were actually just shorts from the Levar Burton Reads podcast.

So really, I'm really 31 books behind schedule. This has been one of my worst years for reading ever. I'm trying to make the time to correct that.

...and of course instead of picking something short to catch up, I started a 1000+ page book, as if I wasn't already behind.

message 41: by Hebah (new)

Hebah (quietdissident) | 675 comments AJ wrote: "Do any of you have tips for getting more books in? (Besides adding audiobooks)"

Honestly, it's partly a matter of prioritizing reading time. I'm a librarian and am surrounded by books, but I still fall into reading lapses because I get busy with other things. My husband and I have started intentionally carving out space in the evening before bed to sit and read, and that does wonders because you start getting reading momentum, which helps propel you into more reading.

message 42: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tstan) | 1261 comments I used to force myself to finish a book no matter what, but now I’ve decided that if I’m not enjoying it, it’s time to move on. I’ve discovered that I free up a lot more time.

Still can't bring myself to do this even though I completely agree.

message 44: by Critterbee❇ (new)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 418 comments Scheduling time for reading is very rewarding - something to look forward to - and also a great way to set a habit.

I read at different times throughout the day, but always right before I go to sleep. Of course, I have to read calmer books then, so it does not keep me awake - scary and exciting books are for earlier in the day. Unless a book has a satisfying conclusion, then I can read it if I will finish it before sleeping. I have several books going at once, so can judge which one would be best for me to read at night.

And, getting an ebook reader really increased my reading rate - to have hundreds of easy to locate books to choose from, without taking up space.

message 45: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12914 comments My tip is quite simple. I have a book with me wherever I go. In fact it’s my book that I’m reading that keeps all of my important documents for the day. It’s where the receipts go, my daily list, checks from my practice, and a bunch of other things land in there too. Because I’m always carrying it around. So I always have it when I have a few minutes before my kids arrive, or a half an hour quick stop for coffee, or you’re waiting for an appointment.

I made a resolution this year to stop reading a book if I was not enjoying it. Have not regretted that decision, although I did finish a few books that I did not want to, just to complete a challenge, or commitment to buddy read.

I do occasionally give up on books, but for some reason feel guilty about it! However, I have been in a bit of a slump this month and finally chucked BOTH my audiobook and paper book and started new ones. Made all the difference and now I am flying through books again!

I may still get back to one of the books I gave up on at some point. I think I would like it more if I were just in a different head space.
