SOLVED. Fantasy series with a sorcerer? mage? that's a jerk. [s]

I've never read this series because I heard the main character, a sorcerer or a mage, was a horrible person. Basically rapes the main love interest.
I thought it was a book by RA Salvatore, but now actually going through his book titles I don't recognize anything that could be it.
-Thought the character was named something mundane, like Thomas or Tim
-Thought he came from our world
-Remember the cover being yellow/orange with a dragon blowing flame at a man on a cliff.
-It was definitely a series
-older series so maybe 1990s and earlier
-Character was probably an OK person to be written "at the time" but modern readers seem to dislike him.
