I read ( and really enjoyed) Girl in Disguise by Greer Macallister which is about a female Pinkerton's agent so felt I already knew a lot about them (fictional ones at least). I thought that bringing them into this story added another dimension to the investigation. Allie in particular seemed very capable.
I liked that Frank was willing to accept help in the investigation. I knew that the Pinkertons have been around since the civil war, but didn't even think about their being female agents. I liked Allie Shea and thought she was a great agent. I actually liked Douglas Victor (or Victor Douglas) too. He seems like he could be a good agent too.
I was also aware of the Pinkertons' activities during the Civil War but didn't know they also employed female agents. It is interesting that private investigation firms were more open than the police. Allie Shea and Douglas Victor were interesting characters. I hope we will see more of them.
I really don’t know much about the Pinkerton’s history so this was interesting. I certainly was unaware they used female agents. I thought Allie was good and trained Maeve well. I enjoyed the prickly interchanges between Frank and Victor. Their competitiveness was fun.
If you get the chance do read Girl in Disguise. It is a fictional account based on the true story of Kate Warne who was Pinkerton's first female agent. It takes place in Chicago during the Civil War.
