Amy*skye.rhyme | 183 comments I'd like to find more Paranormal, Fantasy, or Science Fiction with an endearing sidekick "creature" who makes hilarious comments. I'd like to keep it to Adult Fiction, but some YA is okay if the book would appeal to all ages. I've found one or two lists for the best sidekick characters but the lists aren't well populated so I'm hoping for more ideas. They can be any kind of creature, a gargoyle, golem, dog, familiar, or any miscellaneous monsters, etc. Here are a few examples of my favorites to get the ball rolling:

Embrace The Darkness (Guardians of Eternity, #2) by Alexandra Ivy Embrace The Darkness and Levet (Guardians of Eternity, #9.5) by Alexandra Ivy Levet by Alexandra Ivy
(Levet the tiny Gargoyle is awesome!)

Deadly Remains (A Clairvoyant's Complicated Life, #1) by Katherine Bayless Deadly Remains by Katherine Bayless
(Red the Golem/necromancer/stuffed teddy bear)

She's No Faerie Princess (The Others, #10) by Christine Warren She's No Faerie Princess by Christine Warren
(the 2 pint-sized fairy sidekicks)

Kneel or Die by Michael Anderle Kneel or Die by Michael Anderle
(T.o.m. the alien from any of the Kurtherian Gambit books and Asher the dog from the books after "Never Forsaken")

Wickedly Dangerous (Baba Yaga, #1) by Deborah Blake Wickedly Dangerous by Deborah Blake
(her dragon companion that masquerades as a dog, or a cat in later books)

Aerulan | 1317 comments For one that's a little bit older (published in the 90s) Summon the Keeper the main character has a talking cat who was pretty funny. So were several of the other characters.

ETA I'll second SamSpayedPI's suggestion of the Verania series, The Lightning-Struck Heart was hysterical.

Martini (shakenorstirred) | 215 comments The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix is quite dark YA fantasy: Sabriel has Mogget, a sardonic white "cat", and Lirael and Abhorsen have the Disreputable Dog.

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 6917 comments Mod
Jhereg (and the rest of the series) has a great side-kick. It's set in a world where Fae rule and humans are pretty much marginalized. But the MC in the series is a human who is a member of that world's "Mob". While the side-kick is funny, these are not humour books.

Another oldie is Witch and Wombat. Don't know how hard that one will be to find, but it really wasn't popular when it was released, and the author only did a couple of books. The sidekick started out as a pick pocket here on our Earth and tried to rob the wrong person. He promptly found himself as a raven (or crow maybe?) since he'd only mildly annoyed the witch (this happens before the book, and is kind of alluded to in flashback.) When this starts the PtB decide that a wombat would make a better familiar/sidekick to a witch, so he finds himself turned into one. The book has some serious moments and some funny ones. But I enjoyed it way back when.

Amy*skye.rhyme | 183 comments Thank you everyone for the suggestions. All those mentioned so far are new to me, so I'll be adding them to my reading lists!

Gillian Wiseman (gillianwiseman) | 241 comments Well, Harry's sidekick Bob is pretty funny, in the Dresden Files novels; he's not a "major presence" in every book, but he is extremely sarcastic, and I really like him.

Gillian Wiseman (gillianwiseman) | 241 comments In a similar vein, in the second Lockwood and Co book (The Whispering Skull), Lucy meets her "sidekick" (a skull in a jar). This skull becomes more and more important as the series goes on.

TinaNoir | 171 comments Katie McAlister's Aisling Grey series first book is You Slay Me. She has a demon sidekick in the form of a dog who is hysterical.
