Here it is, the new Dune: https://youtu.be/6r-WSSbKUC8
The visuals are better than expected but the music is not nearly good enough.

Kalin (kalein) | 135 comments Futurecon, a virtual convention dedicated to speculative fiction from all over the world, will take place from 17 to 20 September. There's a panel about solarpunk on Friday:

https://www.futureconsf.com/schedule

And I've already mentioned our group in their Solarpunk channel on Discord. :)

I just came to share the same thing. Silvana let me know about the event and I'm definitely going to try and make that one 😉

It has been a very interesting one. I liked Futurecon panels because the panels are twice as long as the other con panels I've been to this year.

Thanks Kalin! Only about halfway through but I am loving this so far. After feeling a bit defeated this year, the passion and enthusiasm, as well as the actual ideas shared, are lovely to see. This is the kind of energy the world needs more of!

message 160: by Kalin (new)

Kalin (kalein) | 135 comments Heehee ... you're gonna love Kim Stanley Robinson's approach to the choice of the word "solarpunk" in this panel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3qZL...

The panel is GREAT, though. Probably the one I liked best from the whole Futurecon.

message 161: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) I was laughing when he said that 😂 though it took 18 minutes to finally move on to other subjects. Genre debate is always so lengthy and often neverending.

I enjoyed the panel too. Was happy Ian McDonald could make it after missing him at WorldCon. Him bringing up system thinking was my fave part. Not often a concept in my line of work got mentioned by my fave SF author.

Kalin these are absolutely brilliant! Still working through the second one, but both panels have independently touched on a point I saw recently in an article, which I thought I'd share: https://www.tor.com/2020/08/19/the-fl...
It's a small part of a lot of really good other parts, but it's one of the things that's been mulling around in my head a bit, and it's nice to see it starting to pop up organically around the place.

Absolutely! And I just reached the discussion on the name Solarpunk - I definitely agree with Francesco that the "punk" appendix is to be in the counter-culture; where in the 70's that was aggression, refusing to fit a mold, anarchy - today to be counter-culture is to embrace kindness, inclusivity, and people over profit. Though honestly it also probably came about because -punk turned into a multipurpose appendix after the popularity of movements like cyberpunk and steampunk.

The new collectible $2 bill. It’s not Star Trek money, it’s not Monopoly money, it real patriotic currency. Sigh, it does look cool but I can’t get behind patriotic space anymore than corporate Australian space.

One of my personal 2021 challenges is reading the Gonzo papers by Hunter S. Thompson. He once ran for sheriff of Aspen on a Freak Power platform, but today it sounds like Solarpunk! The man was ahead of his time:

2390487-D-9-F4-A-4192-8-CE2-C22-A57-EFD5-F7
Freak Power in the Rockies Rolling Stone (10/1/1970) ★★★★★
Thompson participated in a grass roots campaign for a far left candidate for Mayor of Aspen and almost won. It inspired him to run for sherif. His platform was ahead of its time, very Solarpunk!

1. “Sod the streets at once. Rip up all city streets with jackhammers... All public movement would be by foot and a fleet of bicycles, maintained by the city police force.”

2. Change the name of Aspen to Fat City: “the main advantage here is that changing the name of the town would have no major effect on the town itself, or on those people who came here because it’s a good place to live. What effect the name-change might have on those who came here to buy low, sell high and then move on is fairly obvious … and eminently desirable. These swine should be fucked, broken and driven across the land.”

3. “Non-profit sales will be viewed as borderline cases, and judged on their merits. But all sales for money-profit will be punished severely. This approach, we feel, will establish a unique and very human ambiance in the Aspen (or Fat City) drug culture...”

4. “Hunting and fishing should be forbidden to all non-residents, with the exception of those who can obtain the signed endorsement of a resident—who will then be legally responsible for any violation or abuse committed by the non-resident he has “signed for.”

5. “The Sheriff and his Deputies should never be armed in public... The whole notion of disarming the police is to lower the level of violence—while guaranteeing, at the same time, a terrible punishment to anyone stupid enough to attempt violence on an un-armed cop.”

Someone needs to take up this banner!

That's really interesting, I had no idea he'd done any of this, or written about it. Thanks Lena, that should be some good reading!

We just got word the power grid is about to fail. Lots of my friends have been loosing power on and off. I could kick myself for not buying firewood this year but usually it just sits there crumbling into a mess. There will be a lot of cold Texans tonight. Keep us in your thoughts.

Next chance I get I’m building off grid!

Just watched some of the post humanist panel. My favorite such story is Bright Crown of Joy by Livia Llewellyn but that’s not really Solarpunk. But I was wracking my brain trying to a remember a similar Solarpunk story where humans transition to be empathically joined to the coral reef. Anyone remember that one?

I hadn't seen you Kalin! But I watch on demand, so chat isn't really a thing. I think it was you that originally introduced us to FutureCon last year, thank you!

Lena, I feel like there is a similar one, but I'm struggling to think of it too! I've been back through the solarpunk collections I remember reading and that's the only one that really fits.

"Global Optimistic Futures" on Saturday
