kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Hi everyone!

I'm from the Philippines and like some of you, haven't seen the movie. I actually have zero idea what this movie is about but judging from the photo it's scary.

I will come back and read more what needs to be done later. Excited to be playing another rpund of Wheelathon with you all!

message 55: by Eunice (new)

Eunice | 666 comments I actually haven't heard of this movie before until I searched it just now. It's an animation film, so it shouldn't be too scary...right? I can't stand the scares in horror films and movies. Books are fine though.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments I stay away from anything scary. The only horror movie I've watched was this Thai movie entitled Shutter (?)

Oh, and hi Eunice! First time meeting someone from the Philippines here! Finally, same time zone ;) Are you in Manila?

sounds better than the alien-dragon-shape-shifter erotica novels we were reading to prevent chains being broken. Lots of fun though (I was in Minerva btw)

Purple aliens, a whole lot of racist dystopian books, and really strange erotica that I was doing fine never knowing it existed.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments I was in Slytherin (Snape) amd played Chaser in the last round. I heard about THAT book, everyone couldn't stop talking about it! NBRC definitely promotes diversity ;) You beaters had the most "fun" didnt you?

OH MY GOD I'm in St Kilda East too!!! No one I meet is ever from St Kilda East! I'm a few minute walk to Alma Park. you might be my new favourite person on Goodreads Chava! Haha

message 63: by Tina ❣ (new)

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 2000 comments Quidditch was hard. I don't know how people stuck through it for so long. I was in a different timezone from everyone so I felt like I would have put my team (Hufflepuff) at a disadvantage. I played Keeper for 2 days and I just couldn't do it. I didn't read the alien dragon shifter, the brides or the mrs fix-it books but from the sounds of the complaints, I'm glad I didn't :P

message 64: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments Never mind, it was slytherin we were playing. Beater was hard as the other team had one in US and Australia so we ran through the night. I have never read so much, so fast.

Tina wrote: "Do we get extra points for writing DQ in the BOM?"

Yes :)

Copying from the rules:
========

◈ BOM bonus:
- Writing a day's worth of discussion questions = 40 points
- Participating in a current BOM (participating in discussion) = 20 points
Note 1: We will accept one team member per book per team for writing a days DQs. If, by three days prior to the BOM starting, we don't have enough volunteers to write all DQs, then we will let more than one team member per team write questions. If we have more people than days sign up (prior to 3 days before start date) we will randomise the volunteers to determine those who can write DQs
Note 2: Books need to be part of the spell-it-out to be used for points

I did one round and liked the adrenaline rush from it. It was crazy reading though. I relied heavily on audiobooks that I could put on double or even triple speed :)

message 71: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I really enjoyed TT! I was on Team Hermoine. I like how all the books you read count for some points. Wheel seems a bit more constrictive, but I love it, too. I didn't join in Quidditch & only read one quick book for the maze. It's really too bad that a full-time job gets in the way of reading!
I don't normally do ebooks. I get all my books from the public library. It requires a bit of pre planning on my part, but it's the planning I love best. I always have a bunch of books on hand to go through...

I love my library too, Lauri. But these days I find the only reading I really get to is audiobooks which thankfully my libraries have lots of and then I use audible for the ones I really want 😉
I have uni exams next week so after that I’ll actually be able to read books that aren’t textbooks. Hooray! 😃

message 73: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Yay - that is a huge thing to get exams done.

I love audiobooks - they help me not mind driving to/from work so much. If I have time to just read though - then I'll go to reading with my eyes. :)

message 74: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments I can't do audiobooks but I read most evenings. Good luck on exams. I should be paper writing but have Monday off and will do it then. I do library almost entirely for reading but do lots of ebooks.

message 75: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments I go through 2 audiobooks at least a week driving to and from work. I have new staff starting which means I have to be in the office each day instead of working from home, so I might got more done for this challenge. I also read at night, but I tend to fall asleep reading

I work mainly from home, and when I am on-site with clients it depends on their location as to if I drive or take a train. I quite like clients in the city as I get to sit on the train with my kindle which is a rare treat while Uni semester is on :)

message 77: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments We sure are all scattered over the world, aren't we? This is so cool! Maybe I won't be the only one awake late night...
With so many talking about university & exams, I fear I am very ancient indeed! I don't do audiobooks at all as I have nowhere to listen to them. I work only 5 minutes from home, so there's virtually no commute. I also think I'm the type of person who learns best by reading or writing words on a page.

So let's keep the ball rolling with a question or thought per day. I'll start off with:
What do you do for a living?

message 78: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I love that we are all over - its so fun hearing about different places!

I teach math at the university for a living. I really like teaching, and am really tired of grading. But on the whole, working with students is rewarding (except financially).

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I am an office assistant in the medical records unit of our state hospital. (Yes, mental hospital.) I mostly deal with requests for information from other hospitals, probation officers, social security, disability, case managers, etc. it's always super busy & I do like it because I feel as though I'm helping people. I would appreciate a quiet day every now and again, though!

message 80: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Oh that's awesome, and does indeed sound super busy. My daughter is a nurse at the state mental hospital here - she works mostly with the dementia patients, and she loves them a lot. But wow I can imagine the paperwork and regulations you have to sort - what a challenge!

message 81: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments I am brand new PhD student in zoonotic diseases. That sounds like a lot of paperwork. Do you get tomorrow off?

message 82: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments I love our diversity too.
I work as a team leader of a family therapy program working with families referred by child protection. The families are either at risk of losing their kids to the system or the kids have just been returned to the family's care. I drive a lot, hence the audiobooks.

I run my own biz which is a consulting company - specialising in people & culture - so I work across lots of different organisations and locations. I’m also studying my post-grad in psychology. Just one year to go 😎
And then my other part time job are my kids 😂 They are only 3 and 6 so life is rather busy!

Good morning all,

There have been some more questions and clarifications in the capatins group, so I'm just posting below so everyone can see. Most important is that only books STARTED after the challenge count. Countdown to start is here

==============

◈ The team must read books to complete a read through of their word before they can get points for completing subsequent read throughs (i.e. if you only complete one book in the second read through and three in the third, you don't get points for the those 3 books in the third).
Example:
BONES BONES BO --> Gets points for all letters
BONES BON BO --> Only BONES + BON get points
◈ Books must be more than 160 pages in length. Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scriptplays (movie and theater), Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified (by arbookfinder.com) as more than 40,000 words
◈ Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count.
◈Only books READ during the specified week can be used (“read date” is what counts to know which week it must be used in - but remember it must be started after the challenge begins.) Books cannot be read and then “banked” to use for a later week in the challenge

message 87: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments Do we want to look at setting up letters since we seem to have five blood in title and only can get points for it once? Especially, since we will need lots of O's.

Yes, if you are marking books to the spreadsheet, please include everything it can count for. Because then we can move it around, but also because it needs to count for a letter *and* blood in the title (if we use it for that special point category)

— Massiel (rollitosdecanela) | 512 comments Karen ⊰✿: So... I need to fill the letter (B,L,O,D) with the author or title of the book and fill again the remain extra bonus points? And title has to have the letter "blood" mandatory?

message 92: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments So we need L's and O's. Since others have blood in title, I can switch that one out for another.

Circe wrote: "Karen ⊰✿: So... I need to fill the letter (B,L,O,D) with the author or title of the book and fill again the remain extra bonus points? And title has to have the letter "blood" mandatory?"

Any of the bonus' ("Word in Text , "Word in Title/Series, "Word on Cover and "Word as Genre ) also need to fit for one of the letters. So for week one, that is B, L, O or D

You can use any of these for the letter:

Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter of the series name. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word. If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used. We're also allowing for Translators names, as long as the edition you are reading is a translation version.

If a book works for more than one letter, please let us know as it may help with moving books around to suit (as we need to complete a spell it out of one instance of BLOOD before being able to get points for the next one)

Lexi wrote: "So we need L's and O's. Since others have blood in title, I can switch that one out for another."

Thanks Lexi :)
I'll go looking for Ls and Os that I can read that week. I think O will probably end up as the more difficult one, especially as we have 2 in each spell-it-out

message 95: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments If we all read the number of books we said we read and life does not interfere, we should be able to spell BLOOD six times in a week. I can focus on O's but get books for the library so will request about ten days out.

message 96: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I think I can find books for any letter, especially since we can use character names :) But I think that my blood genre book only fits D. Thank goodness it fits something though!!

message 97: by — Massiel (new)

— Massiel (rollitosdecanela) | 512 comments Karen ⊰✿: Got it, thank you!

message 98: by Eunice (new)

Eunice | 666 comments I have an O and an L book here.

Does this mean that we have to read a B, L, D, and two Os first before the next set, or do we just have to make sure that the completed books, even if not read in order, can spell BLOOD multiple times?

message 99: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I don't think order matters - we just need to spell the word. Yay for O and L - that's great Eunice!

message 100: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
Great :)

No order, it’s just that before the week we need to make sure we have completed words to get max points.

Example:

By the end of the week, We spell
BLOOD
BLOOD
BLOOD
BLOO
BL
B

we would only get points for BLOODx3 AND BLOO
So us captains will be keeping a watchful eye and shouting out as the week goes if we have a deficiency of any letters to get max points. It’s also why it’s important to give every letter that a book can work for so we can manoeuvre things ;) I hope that makes sense!
