Update

It seems we do better with longer words. We've only read 32 books this week (we did 60 last week)!
We don't need any particular letters, as we have a number of books we can move around if required as they cover quite a few letters.

We have about 22 hours before this week ends and BROWN begins ;)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments I just finished our BOM (which I will post shortly) and just waiting for some discussion questions. It was dark for a YA but I guess Mary Shelley was only a teenager when she wrote it and in totally adult circumstances. I was thinking, "I'll have to go back and read the original" (it is 200 years ago this year since it was first published) and lo and behold in the kindle edition of Elizabeth Frankenstein it is included.

I've also got one more to finish tonight. It's a guilty pleasure (nowhere in the same literary universe as Frankenstein!!) but a fun read.

Lexi | 4247 comments This week has been exhausting and I have a conference all day Sat-Sun. I hope to finish my two by tomorrow. I will also most likely be down to 3-4 books a week until I get a better handle on my school work.

Allison Ann | 1408 comments I tried to read longer books this week but it just didn't work out. So I finished two shorties yesterday and added them to the spreadsheet. And I have one more on the go that I will finish before the deadline today.

I have the spreadsheet all updated, but I'll keep an eye out here for any last minute stragglers.

We ended up spelling Travel 7 times with an extra "T" too!

Update

We've read 43 books as a team this week (last week was 60). But our page counts were higher as we have an average of 27 points per book (last 2 weeks was 21). So we are only 90 points lower for this week compared to last week

Please don't finish anything in the next 52 minutes as we are going to have week 3 locked.

I'll post again once week 4 is ready to roll for BROWN

Week 3 Oogie Boogie Awards

Great work team!
Week 3 Award goes to M for smashing her estimated books per week so far this challenge and reading an 80-pointer this week (there has to be a plus side for being stuck at home!)

I finally finished
Sourcery (Discworld, #5; Rincewind #3) by Terry Pratchett
I don't know why it took me so long. I just kept picking up other books. I guess because the Discworld series are books that you can just kind of read a chapter here and there

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Captains, do you have any idea where we are running in the competition? Just curious... I'm loving the Wheel.

message 722: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments We are middle of the pack, which is pretty great! We were like #2 in tough letters til this past week - TRAVEL didn't have any officially tough letters, which hurt that ranking temporarily.

There is a link to the team comparison here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Thanks Suzanne. We're going great. It always amazes me in these challenges how much people can read. Just wow.

message 724: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I agree (on both counts). I feel like I read a ton - well I do! But I don't hold a candle to some people!

M Beal | 1680 comments Trying to decide if I should read another door stop for this round. A friend just gifted me with a copy of Outlander. While it counts for O and R only it is 850 pages.
Has any one else here read it?

message 726: by — Massiel (new)

— Massiel (rollitosdecanela) | 512 comments hi guys, I was wondering if Magic Breaks (Kate Daniels, #7) by Ilona Andrews counts as brown cover, is it okay? on the cover the girl is light brown skin and also her leash(?) is brown too. does it counts?

message 727: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Circe - you're right it has brown on it, but it isn't over 50% brown, so won't count as a brown cover. I think we have someone reading a brown cover book though, and I highly recommend Kate Daniels if you want to read it :)

M - I really loved Outlander - I'd probably call it historical fiction/romance. However, I also know several people that had problems with it, especially with a couple of scenes, so it isn't a book I give a blanket recommendation for :)

I think it is worth reading. I'm one of the people that couldn't get past a few things to really invest in the romance, so I didn't continue past book 1 or watch the TV show. But I think you just need to read and decide for yourself. It is a doorstopper, but is actually not difficult to get through

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Yep, I'm reading for the brown cover. Alliance (Red Star, #1) by Catherine Johnson .

I liked the first three books very much and I'm not a romance reader (although I love time travel). And the 850 pages goes fast. Not sure about the character names for BROWN though. Definitely an R, maybe a B, can't think of any Ws offhand and I don't think the N I am thinking of shows up until the 2nd book.

message 734: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments For our BROWN week I'll definitely be reading The Covenant B for author Beverly Lewis & I'm sure other letters will turn up. Also Precious and Grace for R - character Precious Ramotswe. I'll manage another book or two. I am working on Elizabeth Frankenstein for the BOM points, but I think I'll save it for next week....

The Covenant (Abram's Daughters, #1) by Beverly Lewis Precious and Grace (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency #17) by Alexander McCall Smith

I loved Outlander! I'm on An Echo in the Bone (Outlander, #7) by Diana Gabaldon now. They are all doorstops! If you like historical fiction, you will love them. There's a great deal of historical fact. Her research is amazing. The first one has a lot of Scots & French history. I enjoy the attention to detail. There's a mystery element, romance, fantasy. If you like the idea of time travel & star crossed lovers, this is your series! On the down side, there's war & gore, graphic sex, some kink...
I know all sorts of people who enjoy these from an elderly Roman Catholic nun, to a gay dude & of course, lots of middle aged women :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Haha, Lauri guilty as charged, I'm definitely one of those middle aged women who have read and loved the Outlander books. (Although I was only a young woman when I started reading them. !) I liked the first four the best, the later books are very long and nearly filled with too much historical detail. Can't believe I'm saying that...

No, Lisa, you're totally right! I devoured the early books. I even took The Fiery Cross in hardcover on a family trip to read on the plane in the early 2000s! I put a cover on it & told everyone I was reading the Bible! HA!
I am totally slogging through Echo. I did not like any of the Lord John books, although they do fill in some blank spots. I decided to finish the entire series & will stick with it.
Speaking of IT, I am stuck around page 620 of 1100+. Maybe by the end of the year. Sigh.

My method of reading is to keep stacks of library books on my upstairs landing with others in shopping bags. When I pass by them I grab a couple for the day. Sometimes I grab more than others... It all depends which titles 'speak' to me at a particular moment in time. Weird? Perhaps?..

message 738: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I love that method Lauri! I kind of do that with my kindle and books. But challenges sometimes force me to focus read more than I would do on my own :)

I keep a fairly small stack of 3-4 library books and then kind of pick what suits me at the time

Yes, rules say:

Books must be 160 pages or more in length. Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scriptplays (movie and theater), Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified (by arbookfind.com) as more than 40,000 words. If not on arbookfind, check audible for an audio version of longer than 4 hours for the book to be valid.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments You will all be glad to know I finally watched Nightmare Before Christmas last night. My husband thinks I'm insane! (well, he's thought that for a long time now. He isn't wrong!) I must say I did like it. Oogie Boogie is such a villain, though! How did we end up on this team? Too funny. At least I catch all the references now...
