Christina | 14 comments Hi everyone!!! I’ll be leading our discussion for this book. I just started and I’m already loving it! Let me know your thoughts

Kacie Olson I just started it tonight and it drew me right in. I love the setting of New York in the 1920s!

Christina | 14 comments While I feel like her writing can be a little dense at times, I love how Libba Bray introduces each new character and setting. For anyone who is currently reading or has already read the book, who’s your favorite character? Mine is probably Memphis!

Christina | 14 comments I’ve finally had some more time to read, and I am now absolutely obsessed with this book! The plot had really started to pick up, and Evie has to be my new favorite character. Her lines with Sam have been absolutely hilarious the past few chapters. Any thoughts on their relationship? Also, how weird is Sam’s new job? What do you think will come out of that?

a featherless biped I love this setting too! I feel there are too many WW2 books (no hate, I love those books as well), so having this fresh new setting with the added fantasy just makes it really unique. My favorite character is also Memphis, and though I do really like Evie, I think she's just too careless sometimes.

Christina | 14 comments Interesting thoughts! I too love this completely different perspective on the world at this time. This is the first book I’ve read in a while on this time period that feels fresh and different. Libba Bray clearly knows what she’s doing, because not only is everything different, it all also feels very authentic. I don’t know if anyone got that feeling while reading, but I felt fully transported. As for Evie’s character, I wasn’t the biggest fan of her in the beginning, but she’s just so funny around Sam that I have to love her. I don’t know if that will stay true for the rest of the book though. How far is everyone in their reading? Is anyone done with the book?

a featherless biped This was actually the first time I've read a book that took place in the 1920s. You can definitely tell a good mount of research went into this, with all the slang and everyday things described perfectly. I do like Evie's conversations with Sam, but I also wonder if Sam is ever going to eventually betray her or not (seems unlikely). It's just that I feel Evie is a little too carefree, disobeying some rules without much of a thought, and always getting drunk (I'm not a fan of alcohol). It is unique in not only the time period, but also the different genres infused. This is definitely historical fiction and fantasy, but mystery and some horror is also there.
I'm like a quarter way through, though I haven't gone back to it in a while. I confess that I'm one of those people who would search up a summary of a book because of curiosity (sorry!). I'm planning on continuing over the next few days.

Christina | 14 comments I do the same thing!! But I actually just finished this book (it did take me a while to get through) and I enjoyed it. However, I think there was a lot of stuff left unexplained at the end of the book which bothers me. But we have to give the author credit for all of that research and an extreme attention to detail. I’ll hopefully be picking up the next book soon! Let me know when you finish so that we can talk more about specific details.

Janet (janetll69) | 18 comments My jaw just hit the floor because I just realized that I'm actually in the process of reading a book that is also one of our "Currently Reading" books! I'm about a 1/3 of the way through and the only thing I'm not caring for is that there seems to be too many "main characters" and I do not need to see the scenes that are done by the "bad guy".

Christina | 14 comments I have to agree with you. While I loved all the characters, I felt like there were too many POVs throughout the entire book. You jump around a lot and it takes a while to understand things. But I personally loved the scenes from the “bad guy”. I thought they were interesting, but I do agree that is was just another POV too many. It’s still a great book, and I hope you enjoy it!

Kelli Stewart | 2 comments I listened to this book on audio a few years ago and I really think the narrator added an extra element to an already great story. This is probably my favorite of Libba Brays books. The setting, the research, the details... loved it! Book 2 is great, too. You all should get right in that 😊😊

Evelyn Vu | 2 comments I finally started actually participating in Goodreads stuff and I’m so happy that the book I was already reading is one of the BOTMs! I’m excited to see how this works!

Farren (mmmcookies) | 302 comments I'm not a fan of historical fiction but I ended up being pleasantly surprised by how much fun this setting was. I wasn't a fan of Evie initially, but I grew to like her as she matured and stopped trying so hard to be sassy and witty all the time. I did like Memphis more than her though, and I thought Jericho's secret was interesting and unexpected.

I listened to the audiobook since it is so highly recommended, and although I haven't really liked January LaVoy in the past, I ended up hooked into the story once I got used to all the different voices she was using. I wish I remembered more specifics from the story because it's quite a long book to reread, so I'm hoping the next book will have some refreshers in the beginning.

I think this is a great book to read this time of year, and the whole series would be fun to read as a group. Let's hope the group will vote on the sequels for our future BOTMs!

Christina | 14 comments I’m glad everyone has been enjoying it!! This was the first of Libba Bray’s books that I’ve read, and I loved it! Hopefully I’ll like some of her other books too. But now you guys are making me want to pick up the audiobook for a reread, or maybe even to continue with the series. I’m not a huge fan of audiobooks but I can see why this book could be a good one. I also have to agree that this book takes elements of historical fiction to a whole new level. For me, historical fiction just feels dry, bland, and boring, but this book was exciting from start to finish. And hopefully we’ll be able to read the next one together soon!!

Danielle I audiobooked this last year and was certainly sucked in to the atmosphere and mystery of the book, though all the characters did annoy me at times.

Christina | 14 comments I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed the atmosphere of the book while listening to it just as much as I did reading it! And while I can agree that some of the characters can be annoying at times, I felt like they acted in accordance with the plot and grew as people throughout the book. Any particular instances of a character being annoying?

Janet (janetll69) | 18 comments I finally got this finished and while I liked it, does anyone else felt like there were WAY too many "main" characters and that this could have been trimmed down to 300 pages and would have still been a good story?

I presume that many of the characters will be in the future books, but they didn't feel necessary to this story and could have been left out and introduced later.

Farren (mmmcookies) | 302 comments Janet wrote: "I finally got this finished and while I liked it, does anyone else felt like there were WAY too many "main" characters and that this could have been trimmed down to 300 pages and would have still b..."

I agree. I will probably have trouble remembering who is who when I get to the sequel

a featherless biped I also agree. I took a peek at the sequel, and it seemed like they added even more main characters.

Christina | 14 comments Oh no! I don’t think I can handle any more characters at this point. I loved this book, but there were definitely a few too many characters. The author should have at least cut down on the number of POVs

a featherless biped Yeah, I totally agree! I think there was only one or two new POVs in the second book, but I'd have to check.
