This book started rough. And, I mean like the first 15 pages. It starts with, you know, just some causal workplace sexual harassment. Some privileged white guy brags about his sexual exploits at work, asks the lead female inappropriate questions about her sex life, and then gives her unsolicited advice about how to make sure the sex is better for the man.

Y’all, during the week of Brett Kavanaugh, I have ZERO tolerance for this bullshit.

I was even more incensed because I thought this was the meet cute! What kind of crap is this and why are we normalizing workplace sexual harassment. You know what I think is sexy? NOT being harassed at work.

After 15 pages, I was ready to leave a scathing 1 star review. But, then the book got better.

Stella Lane is a successful woman. She has a PhD in economics, loves her job, and is close to her parents. She also has Asperger’s Syndrom on the autism spectrum (Susie, I need a lesson on how I should be referring to autism!), which makes her personal interactions challenging. With her parents constantly threatening to set her up on blind dates, Stella decides that she needs practice. Practice with relationship and practice with sex. Enter male “escort” (actually, a prostitute), Michael. He signs on to be her fake boyfriend for many months to help her learn how to be in a relationship so she is ready for the NEXT guy that comes along.

Yeah, this was cheesy and was the typical Pretty Woman troupe (y’all, I just don’t like the whole prostitute with a heart of gold set up that glorifies forced sex work), but I just let that go a bit and embraced the chick lit/contemporary romance theme and ended up being pleasantly surprised. I liked the characters, I liked overall message (outside of prostitution), and my goodness the sex was on fire! Whew!

So, it was a rough start, but ended up being a great listen for a single day of deep cleaning my apartment. Especially right after I finished a book on genocide!

Great review! This was probably a good read after the last book.

OMG I don't think I could handle this book right now. Even if it does redeem itself.
